SOLD BY THE J. PAUL GETTY MUSEUM TO BENEFIT FUTURE PAINTING ACQUISITIONS PORTRAIT OF DAVID TENIERS, THREE-QUARTER LENGTH, WEARING A BLACK CLOAK AND WHITE COLLAR, RESTING HIS LEFT HAND ON A CHAIR measurements note 13 5/8 by 9 5/8 in.; 34.6 by 24.5 cm. signed and dated upper left FRVyteRs. f./ 1655 oil on panel PROVENANCE Colonel Sir Godfrey Robert Llewellyn Bt., C.B., C.B.E., M.C., Tredilion Park, Gwent, Wales; By whom sold, London, Christie's, July 16, 1971, lot 43, for 240 gns. to French; French and Company, New York, New York, by whom sold to Burton B. Fredericksen, 1972; Burton B. Fredericksen, Los Angeles, California, by whom donated to the J. Paul Getty Museum, California in 1973, no. 73.PB.154. LITERATURE B.B. Fredericksen, "Recent Gifts of Paintings", The J. Paul Getty Museum Journal, vol. 3, 1976, p. 113, reproduced p. 114; F. Badouin, "Philip Fruytiers", in The Grove Dictionary of Art, vol. 11, New York 1996, p. 807; D. Jaffé, Summary Catalogue of European Paintings in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, 1997, p. 46, reproduced. NOTE The easel standing in the background indicates that the sitter is a painter and, while the panel is not inscribed with the name of David Teniers, comparison with Peter Thys' portrait of the artist in Munich, Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlung, confirms the identity of the sitter as Teniers. In the Munich portrait Teniers is depicted in a very similar pose, although facing in the opposite direction, standing before his estate at Dry Toren, near Perck and the elaborate interior represented in the present work is probably a room therein. Fruytiers evidently enjoyed painting his fellow artists and their families; amongst his relatively small oeuvre are two portraits of Rubens' childrenυ1 and a copy after Rubens of Jan Brueghel the Elder and his familyυ2. Furthermore, his highly detailed miniature Family on a Terrace of 1638 (sold London, Sotheby's February 25, 1959, lot 15), which depicts a painter at work, is possibly a self-portrait. A portrait by Fruytiers in watercolor of an unidentified family is included in this sale (see Part II, lot 121). Although not clear enough to view in any detail, the heraldic shield on the column behind (three white shields arranged 2-1 on a blue background) is synonymous with that of nine families, only one of which, the Vroom family, is Dutch, the others all being French. 1 A miniature, Four Children of Rubens and Hélène Fourment with two Servants of 1638 and now in the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle, and Three of Rubens' Children of 1639, formerly with B. Koetser, London, 1975. 2 A miniature, after Rubens' original in the Courthauld Institute, London.

OTHER PROPERTIES ST. LOUIS AS A CRUSADER measurements note 48.1 by 31.5 cm. oil on panel PROVENANCE Jonson Collection, Sweden, 1926; Anonymous sale, Bukowski, Stockholm, 1930; Consul General Harry Ighussons, Sweden (as anonymous); With Galerie Rudolf Beckers, Dusseldorf, 1965 (as Sir Anthony van Dijck); Private collection, Germany, by 1965. LITERATURE F. Baudouin, 'Een Antwerps schilder uit Rubens omgeving, Philip Fruytiers, de monogrammist PHF' in Jaarboek van het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen, 1967, p. 151-86, reproduced p. 152. NOTE This sketch is a modello for a large scale canvas of the same subject in the Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp (inv. no.166), signed in monogram PHF (correctly identified by Frans Baudouin to be the monogram of Philip Fruytiers; see Literature, p. 154, reproduced p. 153, fig. 2). In his article, Baudouin rediscovered Fruytiers, long known only as a painter of portrait miniatures, as a painter on large scale format. In his own day, his reputation as a figure painter was well established, as Cornelis de Bie's appraisal of him in 1661 makes clear: 'seer vast gheteeckent en near 't leven wel gestalt, vol vreemde vindinghen, heel gheestich uytgebelt' (C. de Bie, Het Gulden Cabinet vande edele vry Schilder-Const..., Antwerp 1661, p. 389). The painting in Antwerp is part of a series of three paintings by Fruytiers painted for the church of the convent of the Franciscan Friars Recollect, which now houses the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten. The other two paintings, also now housed in the Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp are: St. Francis of Assisi, monogrammed, and St James holding the poisoned chalice. A further painting with rounded top also was made for the same church: The apotheosis of St. Anthony of Padua, monogrammed and dated 1652 (inv. nos. 164, 165, 167). This last painting is also mentioned in a contract dated 1649. It seems therefore likely that the other paintings and the present oil sketch can be dated around the same time. Baudouin detects a few variations between the sketch and the executed canvas of St Louis as a Crusader, most importantly the order worn by the King: in the sketch it is the French Order of the Holy Spirit; while in the painting this has been changed into the Order of Jerusalem. The commissioner must have requested this change, wishing to identify Louis in terms more directly related to the counter Reformation: as a saint and crusader, requesting heavenly support; rather than in his more familiar representation as the King of France. King Louis IX of France (1214-1270) was canonized in 1297, only 27 years after his death.
