      ‘RISING SUN OVER THE OCEAN’, AFTER HASHIMOTO GAHO Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912). Ink and watercolor on silk, attached to a paper hanging scroll with wooden handles. Depicting turbulent waters and the red rising sun in the background. Inscribed ‘Gaho zu’ and sealed in the lower right corner. Condition: The painting in very good condition with minor wear, the mounting with soiling, minor creases and two short tears. Provenance: Family collection of either Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) or his son-in-law Louis (Loek) Borensztajn (1935-2021), Netherlands. Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) was an architect, art collector, dealer, and founder of the first Museum of Japanese Art in the Middle East. He became one of the world’s leading collectors of Japanese art, starting at the age of 18, and continued to collect and work as an art dealer in Berlin in the 1920s. In the 1930s Felix Tikotin fled from the Nazis and hid his collection in the Netherlands. After the war, he decided that his collection should be taken to Israel, where in 1959 and with the help of Abba Hushi, who was the mayor of Haifa, The Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art was established. The Museum's collection comprises more than 8,000 items of art and crafts. Signed lower right GAHO with one seal reading Kokki. SIZE 66 x 28 cm (image) and 161 x 47.3 cm (incl. mounting) Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, little soiling, and minor creasing. Provenance: From a US private collection in New York. Hashimoto Gaho (1835-1908) was a Japanese painter, one of the last to paint in the style of the Kanō school. He was one of the first five painters to be appointed as an Imperial Household Artist and was one of the most authoritative painters in Japan at that time. He opened his own studio in 1860, but the political and economic upheavals surrounding the Meiji Restoration forced Gaho to seek income in other ways than by selling fine art. He produced maps for the Naval Academy, painted on fans, and used his skills in a number of other ways to earn a living. Gaho was invited in 1884, by Okakura Kakuzō, to become the chief professor of painting at the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko (now the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music), which would open five years later. In 1898, Gaho joined Okakura in leaving the Bijutsu Gakko and founding the Japan Fine Arts Academy (Nihon Bijutsuin). He would teach there until his death in 1908. With a wood storage box inscribed to the cover Gaho-o suiboku goisagi zu (Ink painting of a night heron by Gaho), the interior of the cover with an inscription by Mizuta Chikuho (Nanga painter, 1883-1958) dated mid-February 1930.

      HASHIMOTO GAHO, LANDSCAPE Japan, second half of the 19th century Ink and wash on paper, mounted as hanging scroll. 21x17.5 cm. The picture depicts the top of a pagoda faintly visible among the green trees, with a signature and a seal in the lower right corner. It is accompanied by a wooden box with inscription ''In the first ten days of September in the 12th year of Showa (1937), collected by Hidekuni'' and a red seal on the lid. Well preserved. Gaho Hashimoto (1835-1908) was a painter in the early Meiji period of Japan. He studied painting under Kano Shosenin in his early years and later participated in the founding of the Japanese Academy of Fine Arts. His paintings absorbed the traditional realism of Fauvism and the focus perspective and chiaroscuro of Western painting. 桥本雅邦 水墨山水 立轴 日本,19世纪后半叶 纸本水墨。画面描绘绿树丛中隐约可见的塔顶,右下角有签名及铃印,配木盒,盒盖上有书"昭和十二年(1937)九月上浣 秀邦鉴"及红印一枚。保存完好。21x17.5 cm。 桥本雅邦(1835-1908)是日本明治初期画家,早年师从狩野雅信学画,后参与创立日本美术院,其画作吸收野兽派的传统写实和西洋画的焦点透视和明暗法。

Artist: Hashimoto Gaho. ???? 1835-1908 Hashimoto Gaho ?? ??, August 21, 1835 - January 13, 1908) was a Japanese painter, one of the last to paint in the style of the Kano school Born in Edo, he studied painting under Kano Shosen'in , and was influenced as well by the work of Kano Hogai . He created many works in the traditional style of the Kano school, using color & gold, or otherwise monochrome black ink. But while his paintings are very much the works of a traditionalist, using traditional methods and depicting traditional subjects, Gaho, like Kano Hogai, incorporated elements of Western art as well. Gaho was invited in 1884 by Okakura Kakuzo to become the chief professor of painting at the Tokyo BijutsuGakko (??????, now the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music which would open five years later. In 1898, Gaho joined Okakura in leaving the Bijutsu Gakko, and founding the Japan Fine Arts Academy (?????, Nihon Bijutsuin). He would teach there until his death in 1908.
