      Signed lower left: Gelton (faint and difficult to decipher) Toussaint Gelton was probably taught in the Hague but moved to Copenhagen when he was 27 years old, where he worked in the royal palace studio and was appointed royal portrait painter two years later. He was greatly influenced by the works of Cornelis van Poelenburgh, and the present work provides a fine example of this tendency.

The composition goes back to a work by Adriaen van Werff, now in the Danish National Gallery in Copenhagen. The RKD database lists another version of Toussaint's work under nuber 247544, today in the possession of the Staatliches Museum Schwerin. We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer, Amsterdam, for confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph.
