JOHN GENDALL (1789-1865) ST MARTIN'S CHURCH AND MOL'S COFFEE HOUSE EXETER pencil and gouache, 38.5 x 58cm" The focus of the present drawing of the group of buildings in the northern corner of Exeter's historic Cathedral Close is the famous timber framed Mol's Coffee House of 1596, said to have been frequented by Drake, Raleigh and others. It was named after the proprietor, Thomas Mol and in the 19th century was occupied by the Exeter artist and drawing master, John Gendall. Of the church of St Martin, fragments of the original building on the site, consecrated in 1065 survive in the present largely 15th century structure." Provenance: with Frank T Sabin, London.
