Their work, influenced by André Breton, Surrealist techniques and psychoanalysis, was the dominant form of artistic expression in Quebec from the mid-1940s until 1954, while Gervais was attending school and pursuing art studies at the École des beaux-arts de Montreal from 1953-4. A follower of the Automatistes, Gervais’ approach emphasized the materiality of the paint itself, which she applied in thick layers with a palette knife. Using this technique, with virtually no mixing of pigment, she was able to maintain the brilliance of pure colour, as exemplified by Composition.

It is a luscious painting that speaks of summer warmth and autumn ripeness, and Gervais has conveyed the idea of heat through her glowing hot reds with their different translucencies, and through the slickness of her palette-knife application of paint, which feels completely fresh. Suggested by the title of Indian Summer, the shapes in the work might evoke the idea of an ancient wall or another type of architectural ruin, caught under the heat of the fall sun. The swathes of purple, here a royal colour indeed, seem to command centre stage, while the inky blacks set everything off brilliantly. Gervais had a masterful command of colour, and her ability to use reds that tend to orange as wel as ones that tend to black and to apply them in such brilliant harmony as she has done here, is part of the appeal of her vibrant, enthralling works.

Directly, the title refers to the ancient capital of the First Persian Empire. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Iran, Persepolis was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire and is believed to be have been built as a place to celebrate special and symbolic occasions. Indirectly, through Lise Gervais's adept understanding of painterly abstraction, the work also reflects the effervescent Post-Automatist decade in Quebec. During the 1960s, Gervais was dedicated to abstraction and chose pure, unblended colour pigments. Executed in 1963, this work is steeped in Paul-Émile Borduas's non-figurative influence, notably through its tremendously textural landscape. Although Gervais traveled to Europe in 1958, there is no record of her traveling to Persepolis. However, she successfully captures the celebratory nature of the site through the energetic swathes of bold, contrasting colours. Gervais created great movement with her palette knife and, as seen here, the colours are flooding inwards, engulfing the brilliant white pigment. Thus, Souvenir de Persépolis is a great dance of colour, texture, movement and, above all, inspiration.

Choosing pure, brilliant pigments, she allowed very little blending to occur in her work, thus her colours are incredibly rich. In Les sentinelles, this attention to the wonder of colour is enhanced by the visible, varying depth of the paint layers in areas of consistent colouration which have been applied against white, enhancing their brilliance and translucency. Gervais sometimes titled her works with reference to their bold colours, further underlining her interest in this aspect of her art. Quebec-born, she was inextricably linked to the Automatists in her approach and ideals, so much so that Jean-Paul Riopelle collected her work. Gervais was a respected teacher who, after studying at the École des beaux-arts in the late 1950s, went on to teach there herself in the 1960s. She also taught at Concordia University and the University of Quebec at Montreal.
