WALTER L. GREENE New York, 1870-1956 S.S. President Hoover at the Yangtze, Shanghai, China, circa 1931. Signed lower right "Walter L. Greene General Electric Co.". Provenance: Vallejo Gallery, Newport Beach, California. Purchased from the above by Richard Kelton, November 1992. The President Hoover was built in 1930 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. This painting, commissioned by the General Electric Company, portrays the vessel entering port amidst the croweded Chinese waterways. The vibrant colors from Walter L. Greene's pallete, his attention to detail and the dramatic pose of the Hoover underway make this an exceptional image, representative of the grand style of ocean passages in the 1930s. In August 1931 this painting was presented to Captain Robert Dollar of the Dollar Shipping Line by General Electric. It hung in the foyer of the Dollar Line headquarters in San Francisco until 1985. Greene was born in Schenectady, New York and trained at the Boston Art College. From the Kelton Collection of Marine Art & Artifacts. Oil on canvas, 36" x 28". Framed 43" x 35".

Condition B+: reattached upper left corner; small repaired tears, creases and abrasions at edges; minor creases in image. Mounted on paper. In the Hudson River Valley, an area already rife with lore, Storm King looms large both physically and psychologically. For centuries, sailors considered the mountain the home of "local spirits" who threatened the safety of their ships with large thunderbolts. However, to Dutch settlers, the shape of the mountain looked like a giant pat of butter so they referred to it as "Boterberg." It wasn't until a minor romantic poet, Nathaniel Parker Willis, took offense at that very un-romantic Dutch appellation, that the mountain was given the name "Storm King." Walter L. Greene (1870-1956) The construction of the Golden Gate Bridge signed and inscribed 'Walter L. Greene/© GENERAL ELECTRIC CO.' (lower left)oil and graphite on canvas26 1/4 x 20 1/4inoverall: 27 1/2 x 21 1/2inPainted circa 1935 The present work depicts the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco looking north toward Marin. Based on historic photographs, the phase of construction dates to between February and March 1935. The nearly-completed Marin Tower stands formidably in the background, and the early construction of the San Francisco Tower is shown in the foreground. The work is as striking for its meticulous detail as it is for its richly saturated color. The bridge's vibrant orange vermillion color is arguably its most defining feature, captured here to great effect.

Original 1928 Walter L. Greene (1870-1956) New York Central Lines / Storm King Poster

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

WALTER L. GREENE (1870-1956) STORM KING. 1928. 40x26 inches, 102x66 cm. Latham Litho & Printing Co., New York. In the Hudson River Valley, an area already rife with lore, Storm King looms large both physically and psychologically. For centuries, sailors considered the mountain the home of "local spirits" who threatened the safety of their ships with large thunderbolts. However, to Dutch settlers the shape of the mountain looked like a giant pat of butter so they referred to it as "Boterberg." It wasn't until a minor romantic poet, Nathaniel Parker Willis, took offence at that very un-romantic Dutch appellation that the mountain was given the name "Storm King." Greene's image plays with the connotations associated with this later name by emphasizing the dramatic placement and stature of the mountain as it looms over the river, with a train speeding along in the foreground. We box and ship to keep costs low. We do not use a packaging service, unless the costumer prefers us to use them. We can ship either USPS or UPS
