George Lothian Hall, British 1825-1888- Worms Head, Wales; watercolour heightened with scratching out on paper, signed and dated 'G L Hall. 1878' (lower left), bears inscription 'Wormshead' on the reverse of the frame, 54.2 x 100.8 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK (by descent). Note: Hall produced a number of large scale, dramatic coastal landscapes like the present work, which depicts the shore at Worms Head, a small island off the coast of Rhossili, in the south west of Wales. In this work, the artist's bold and extensive use of scratching out has effectively emphasised the spray produced by the crashing waves, and has also imparted the scene with a hazy, misty quality, which contrasts theatrically with the dark rocks above.

A SUITE OF GEORGE IV OAK HALL FURNUTURE COMPRISING A PAIR OF BENCHES AND SIX CHAIRSIN THE MANNER OF GEORGE BULLOCK, CIRCA 1825Each shield back painted with the crest and coronet of the Earl of LisburneThe benches 91cm high, 153cm wide, 38cm deep; the chairs 87cm high, 44cm wide, 39cm deepThe use of oak, the lotus flower carved arm supports and the turned roundels are all features derived from Bullock's work.The crest is an arm embowed in armour holding in the hand a proper a fleur de lis and is either that of the 3rd Earl, John Vaughan (1769-1831) who inherited the title in 1820, or that of the 4th Earl, Ernest Augustus Vaughan (1800-1873).

A pair of landscape views, together two watercolours, one depicting a lake with a house on the shore, boats and figures, and hills in the background, signed and dated 1876 lower left, the other of a three-arched bridge over a wide river, with figures and boats, and a mountain in the background, signed lower right, both approx. 26 x 42.5cm (10.25 x 16.75ins), mounted, framed and glazed as a pair. George Lothian Hall was a watercolour painter of landscape and coastal scenes, particularly of Scotland, North Wales, Ireland and the South Coast. He exhibited eight watercolours at the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street, from 1856 to 1862, and seven works at the Royal Academy, from 1856 to 1875.
