        • A Meissen red Boettger stoneware bust of Emperor Aulus Vitellius
          Nov. 17, 2023

A Meissen red Boettger stoneware bust of Emperor Aulus Vitellius

          Est: €3,000 - €4,000

Hollow bust of the Emperor facing right. Paul Heermann (1673 - 1732) worked as a court sculptor and antique restorer for the Saxon king from 1705. Several bust-models for the moulding in red Böttger stoneware are attributed to him. Ingelore Menzhausen mentions the portrait bust of an unknown man from the Museo Archeologico in Venice as the model for the head called Emperor Vitellius. Heermann probably intended "following a princely custom of the Renaissance, originally to design the series of the twelve first Roman emperors in Böttger stoneware", which Menzhausen found confirmed in the inventory of 1711. There, under no. 43, it says "Ein Kayser Kopff" and others under nos. 71 to 81 (cat. Meissen Frühzeit und Gegenwart. In honour of Johann Friedrich Böttger, Dresden 1982, p. 95).

          Dec. 08, 2006

ATTRIBUTED TO PAUL HEERMANN (1673-1732) DRESDEN, LATE 17TH CENTURY

          Est: £6,000 - £8,000

AN IVORY RELIEF OF THE VIRGIN ADORING THE CHRIST CHILD measurements note 13 by 9.7cm., 5 by 3¼in. carved in low and high relief with the Virgin clasping her hands in prayer and looking down at the sleeping Infant Christ, mounted on an ebonised wood base NOTE The present ivory relief is based on a composition by Guido Reni of which several versions are known. It would have been taken from a print, as the image is reversed. Technically and stylistically it can be compared with work by the Dresden sculptor Paul Heermann (1673-1732). The agitated drapery and the domestic setting against a curtain with exterior behind are reminiscent of another relief of the Virgin and Child attributed to the circle of Heermann in the Staatliches Museum Schwerin, illustrated by Möller.
