    Joseph Henry Sharp (1859 - 1953) Standing Deer, Taos, 1982 restrike etching, edition of 250 embossed in paper lower left: JH Sharp Sharp created a series of etchings on copper and steel plates, with plans to produce a total of 250 in each edition. During Sharp's lifetime, only a small number of the 250 were pulled from the plates, leaving 227 to be produced posthumously. Fenn Galleries, SF, NM, completed the edition of 227 etchings in 1982. They were produced in conjunction with the Sharp retrospective in 1983 and publication of the Sharp biography, The Beat of the Drum and the Whoop of the Dance.

Joseph Henry Sharp (September 27, 1859 – August 29, 1953) was an American painter anda founding member of the Taos Society of Artists, of which he is considered the "Spiritual Father". Sharp was one of the earliest European-American artists to visit Taos, New Mexico, which he saw in 1893 withartist John Hauser. He painted American Indian portraits and cultural life, as well as Western landscapes. President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned him to paint the portraits of 200 Native American warriors who survived the Battle of the Little Bighorn.     JOSEPH HENRY SHARP Still Life with Poppies. Oil on canvas, 1890. 580x405 mm; 22 3/4x16 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower left recto. Ex-collection private collection, New York. Sharp (1859-1953) was an American painter known mostly for his paintings of Native Americans and New Mexico, and he was commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt to paint the portraits of Native Americans who survived the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Montana. Sharp is considered among the first of a wave of many American artists who moved from the East Coast or Midwest to live and work in New Mexico, along with later luminaries such as John Sloan (see lot 35), Gustave Baumann, Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz, who were similarly inspried by the Southwestern landscape.

Henry praises the man for devoting time and energy to the natural history of his state, and states that he will be happy to have a collection of labelled shells from the state offered to him. He also suggests that meteorological instruments be obtained and records kept. Very good.
