  • HERMAN HENSTENBURGH, WATERCOLOR ON VELLUM - STILL-LIFE WITH A BUST OF A PUTTO
    Jun. 22, 2024

HERMAN HENSTENBURGH, WATERCOLOR ON VELLUM - STILL-LIFE WITH A BUST OF A PUTTO

    Est: $50,000 - $100,000

HENSTENBURGH, Herman (Dutch, 1667-1726). Still-life with a bust of a putto and flowers on a ledge. Watercolor and bodycolor, within pen and black ink framing lines, on vellum. Signed: "H: Henstenburgh.fec". ca. 1700. Numbered 51 on the backing. 19 3/8" x 15 1/8" sheet, 21 5/8" x 17 7/8" framed. Provenance: Pieter van den Brande (ca. 1675-1718) or his son Johan Pieter van den Brande (17071758), Middelburg; by descent to Baron E. C. von Pallandt; Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 26 September 1971, lot 338; private collection. In reference to the use of parapets of Italian Renaissance portraiture--half-walls that conceal the lower part of the sitter's body--Henstenburgh connects the bust of a putto to its Italian origin. With knowledge of sculpture, one should assess the eyes of the putto. Rendered with "dead-eyes," eyes sculpted without irises or pupils, their blankness is in opposition to the overflow of life that the garland gives viewers. The putto's layered locks of hair reflect the very same complexities of the garland, framing its face just as petals frame a flower's center. Employed for technical purposes, the garland allows the artist to render the flowers from a variety of angles. Stretching their necks, snails explore the verdure along with butterflies and a bee which rest on their respective flowers to collect nourishment. Despite its location before a stone wall, the period and place of the flowers, insects, and bust cannot be determined, suggesting a timelessness that resists the typical confines of the work's medium. The intensity of the pigment attests to this as preservation of its colors are due to the artist's choice of vellum paper.

HERMAN HENSTENBURGH, WATERCOLOR ON VELLUM - AN URN GARLANDED WITH FLOWERS

    Est: $50,000 - $100,000

HENSTENBURGH, Herman (Dutch, 1667-1726). An Urn Garlanded with Flowers on a Terrace with Shells in the Foreground. Watercolor and bodycolor on vellum. ca. 1700. 16 5/8" x 11 5/8" sheet, 28" x 23" framed. Serpentine, the garland placed around an urn grows outward, nearly penetrating the picture plane to offer a close-up study of the flowers and greenery of which it is made. Before a perfect, twilight sky with hazy hues of pink and purple, the objects of the middle and foreground pulsate with vibrancy, luminous. Although tamed by being uprooted, clipped, and intertwined, Henstenburgh maintains nature's wildness as the right side of the garland escapes the boundaries of his vellum paper. Exoticism exists in the array of seashells which signal the collection of objects by the artist and his ability to unite the foreign with the familiar. In the painting's center is an urn, symbolic of mortality that complements the seemingly immortal state of the work's wildlife.

Literatur: Thieme/Becker 1907-1950, Bd. 16 (1923), S. 435 + Technique: gouache, gum arabic and ink on handmade paper, with gold border, Signature: signed 'Henstenburg fec.' at lower left on the column base, Dimensions: 37.5 x 29 cm, Condition: good, gold margin rubbed, slightly bend, Comment: The still life painter Henstenburgh is specialised on depictions of fruits and flowers as well as butterflies and insects. This splendid still life with peacocks, macaws and pheasants in a flowering garden landscape in front of a Roman temple captivates with its clear, expressive colours and attention to detail. It exists in several versions, also mirror-inverted, in terms of figure staffage, landscape and composition. In other versions the courtly hunting dog guarding the feathered fowl is missing. A very similar version with the dimensions 34,5 x 25,8 cm was offered at an auction in Amsterdam in November 2006. Literature: Thieme/Becker 1907-1950, vol. 16 (1923), p. 435

    Est: $50,000 - $75,000

An Urn Garlanded with Flowers, Peaches, Grapes, Hazelnuts and various insects on a stone ledge. Herman Henstenburgh (1667-1726). Watercolor, gouache and gum arabic over traces of black chalk, on vellum laid on paper. Signed l.r. ‘H. Henstenburgh: fec=’. Provenance: Jacobus A. Klaver (bears his mark on the mount) 17 1/4 x 13 1/2 inches sheet, 28 x 24 1/8 inches framed. The development of natural history painting paralleled progress in the field of science. Drawing played an important role in the advancement of natural history and the influence of animal and plant illustration had a direct effect upon the development of allegorical and trompe l’œil painting. The Dutch were at the forefront of these developments and managed to forge a remarkable synthesis between concern for scientific truth and the decorative and exotic aspects of natural history. Herman Henstenburgh produced exemplary examples of this genre. In his remarkable paintings he breaks away from the somewhat limiting precepts of natural history painting to create a play of lines and colors that can be appreciated not simply for its decorative aspects, but also as a departure from the naturalist’s strictly narrative view towards an art approaching abstraction. Henstenburgh was a pupil of Johannes Bronckhorst, a fellow native of Hoorn in the Netherlands and according to contemporary accounts, his early works very much imitated those of his master, depicting birds and landscapes. He later broadened his repertoire to include splendid flower and fruit pieces, and occasional woodland still-lifes. For his flawless draftsmanship and vibrant colors, Henstenburgh won considerable renown even during his own lifetime.
