They're Fighting Harder Than Ever Original Vintage WWII Poster 1943 by Hewitt

With grenade blasts in the background, a unit of American soldiers are in the thick of battle in this 1943 war bonds poster by John Newton Hewitt, entitled "They're Fighting Harder Than Ever." Painted with an emphasis on patriotic colors, the text urges the viewer to buy war bonds to support the soldiers pictured above. The poster was created during the time span of the Second and Third War Loan Drives. The Second War Loan Drive lasted 20 days, from April 12 through May 1, 1943 which raised $18.5 billion. The Third War Loan Drive lasted 23 days, from September 9 through October 1, 1943 and raised $19 billion. John Newton Hewitt (1885-1958) was an illustrator and fine arts painter. During the depression he illustrated many painted covers for pulp fiction books. This commercial painting style is evident in many of his World War II poster creations. He continued in the graphic arts with artwork for Colliers and Liberty magazines. He also developed a successful fine arts career in portraiture and landscape painting that idealized the mid-century American lifestyle. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. Hewitt, Coventry, one of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace...in Cases of Riot and Tumult, Coining, Murder, Burglary and Felony..., London...Birmingham...Coventry, for the author, [1779]; The Proceedings of J. Hewitt, Alderman..., Birmingham, for the author, 1783, together 2 works in 1 vol., occasional light spotting or browning, a couple of contemporary ink annotations, ex-Rugby School copy with bookplate of M.H.Bloxam, contemporary half calf, rubbed, rebacked, 4to ⁂ An extraordinary and very scarce collection of memoirs and reports by the Coventry magistrate, John Hewitt (1719-1802). "Hewitt was an exceedingly zealous magistrate, prosecuting felons and transporting criminals. He carried on lengthy exchanges of letters with leading government figures of the day, soliciting their support for his actions to keep the peace. The 1750s and 1760s undeniably were decades of widespread civil disorder in the midlands, especially on account of the price of bread, and Hewitt made a stand against the rioters. His experiences of the disorders seem to have encouraged him to publish in 1779 a journal of his proceedings as magistrate, which was a strange mixture of cases he had brought successfully to justice, explanations of criminal law, and descriptions of some notorious local murders and thefts. His chief ambition, however, was to catch the Coventry gang, a group of highly skilled and well-known coiners led by Thomas Lightoler, who ultimately turned king's evidence and fled to Austria, leaving his fellow criminals to be executed at Lancaster in 1768...Hewitt also tried to stop prostitution in Coventry and to enforce appropriate behaviour on Sundays, and he published a handbook for the use of constables (1779)...". FRAMED LITHOGRAPH: "THE CUNARD ROYAL MAIL STEAMSHIP BRITANNIA (JOHN HEWITT, COMMANDER) As she appeared leaving her dock at East Boston February 3d, 1844 bound from Boston to Liverpool." The original print bore this inscription "Dedicated by the publishers to the Merchants of Boston who projected and paid for a canal cut in the ice 7 miles long, 100 feet wide. Much credit was due to the committee and the contractors Messrs. Gage, Hittinger & Co. and John Hill in the perseverance in accomplishing so arduous an undertaking".
