Born in Basel, Switzerland, Heyden studied at the School of Arts in Zí_rich, where she built a strong foundation in color theory. She and her husband lived in many places, but considered Durham, NC home. It was here that Heyden would wander along the Eno River, finding inspiration in the sounds of the water and woods that she would translate into the flowing colors of her tapestries.         hand-woven tapestry of linen and wool, with artist's label on the verso. 34.5 x 43.25 in. Born in Switzerland, Heyden settled with her family in Durham, NC in 1966. During this time she devoted herself to the art of weaving, described her tapestries as: "My tapestries are not paintings. They unfold on the loom within the possibilities and limitations of weaving. Once on the wall, my tapestries express their own identity in a woven composition." Exhibited: Scent of the Pine, You Know How I Feel: North Carolina Art from the Jonathan P. Alcott Collection, Longwood Center for the Visual Arts, Farmville, Virginia, June 20 - October 18, 2014 (illustrated in the accompanying catalogue). Sylvia Heyden translates her love of music to the patterns she creates on her loom, essentially a stringed instrument. Born in Switzerland, she moved to Durham, North Carolina in 1966 where she continued weaving and exhibiting her work until returning to Switzerland in 1993.
