After studying in Paris, London, and Italy, Meytens settled in Vienna, where he became the court painter for Empress Maria Theresa. His style evolved from Baroque to Rococo, marked by a meticulous attention to detail and an ability to capture the elegance and personality of his subjects. Meytens' work significantly contributed to the visual documentation of the Habsburg court, making him a pivotal figure in 18th-century European art. This remarkable painting depicts Emperor Joseph II as a child, reflecting the significance of his birth and early years. In this portrait, the young Joseph II stands confidently in a red jacket and radiates regal composure. Charles Theodore of Bavaria portrayed with marshal's baton, crown, ermine cape and Order of St Hubert, and his consort Marie Elisabeth Elisabeth Auguste of Sulzbach likewise with her royal attributes like the crown and ermine, together with opulent jewellery. In einem Schlosspark mit einer Puppe und einem Schlitten spielendes Mädchenpaar in höfischer Tracht bzw. Knabe und Mädchen, ein Kartenhaus bauend. Sehr fein gemalte Kabinettbilder des Rokoko mit liebreizend geschilderten, höfischen Kinderszenen. Joseph Hickel gehörte zu den bedeutendsten österreichischen Bildnismalern seiner Zeit. Ab 1756 studierte er an der Wiener Akademie und erlangte rasch die Gunst der Kaiserin Maria Theresia. Diese sandte ihn 1768 nach Italien, um für sie Portraits hoher Persönlichkeiten zu malen. Nach seiner Rückehr nach Wien wurde er 1771 zum kaiserlich-königlichen Kammermaler ernannt.
