Thomas Hicks Sold at Auction Prices

Portrait painter, Genre Painter, Landscape painter, b. 1823 - d. 1890

Thomas Hicks (Pennsylvania, New York, France, Italy, 1823 - 1890)
A native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania (b.1823), Thomas Hicks began as a carriage painter, apprenticed to his cousin and primitive style artist, Edward Hicks. As early as 1836 Thomas received his first instruction in portrait painting from his cousin, Edward, whose portrait Thomas painted the following year. He received much acclaim, and with his talents evident seemed destined to be a professional artist.
With his father's encouragement, Hicks attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts*, but stayed only several months and then moved to New York City where in 1838, he entered the Antique Class of the National Academy of Design*. Within the year, he was exhibiting portraits, history and religious paintings at the Academy, and at age 18 was elected an Associate for his painting, Death of Abel. Enrolled from 1840 to 1842 and 1844 to 1845, he continued Academy classes.
In 1845, Hicks began a several-year period of living abroad. He spent time London, Florence, and Rome, where he had an extended stay, and in Paris, he studied for about a year and a half with Thomas Couture.
In 1849, he returned to America and set up a studio as a portrait painter in New York City. From 1856, his studio was in the Astor Place building, distinguished by its foot-high lettering of Hick's name on the facade.
Although Thomas Hicks was a painter of genre, literary, historical and religious subject matter, portraiture remained his 'forte'. "By all reports, he had not only talent and training but also that other gift essential to the success of a fashionable portrait painter: personal charm." (Harding, 268). Throughout his career many illustrious persons were his subjects such as Henry Ward Beecher, William Cullen Bryant, Margaret Fuller, Edwin Booth, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Abraham Lincoln, described as the first oil portrait of Lincoln.
Financially successful, Hicks built a family home he named Thornwood in Trenton Falls, New York, and because of its grandeur and his notoriety, it became a popular tourist attraction. However, most of his professional activity was in New York City, where he continued to exhibit at the National Academy of Design and served on the Academy Council. Also, he directed much energy to the Artists' Fund Society*, which he served as president from 1873 to 1885.
Having lived to see his reputation wane because of his portraiture style becoming out of date, Thomas Hicks died at Trenton Falls, New York, October 8, 1890.

Thomas Hicks (Pennsylvania, New York, France, Italy, 1823 - 1890) A native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania (b.1823), Thomas Hicks began as a carriage painter, apprenticed to his cousin and primitive style artist, Edward Hicks.

Thomas Hicks American, 1823-1890 Edwin Booth as Iago, 1864 Signed T. Hicks and dated 1864 (lr) Oil on canvas 14 x 10 inches Provenance: The artist Edwin Booth, acquired from the above, 1864 Adelson Galleries, Inc., Boston, MA, inv. no. A1576 Private collection, acquired from the above, 1971 Literature: The Magazine Antiques, Mar. 1968, p. 272, illus. Letha Clair Robertson, The Art of Thomas Hicks and Celebrity Culture in Mid-Nineteenth-Century New York, doctoral dissertation, University of Kansas, 2010, p. 142 This painting is accompanied by a photocopy of a receipt dated July 20, 1864 from Thomas Hicks, provided to Edwin Booth in payment of $217 for A cabinet copy of the Iago, in frame. In her doctoral dissertation, Letha Clair Robertson describes the present work as unlocated, and writes that it is reputed to have hung in Booth's home, today the home of the Player's Club, which was founded by the actor. This painting is accompanied by a photocopy of a receipt dated July 20, 1864 from Thomas Hicks, provided to Edwin Booth in payment of $217 for A cabinet copy of the Iago, in frame. On December 15, 1860, Edwin Booth appeared to great acclaim in the role of Iago at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York. Five months later, Thomas Hicks painted a full-length, life-sized portrait of the actor in that role. It was not a commissioned portrait; the two men enjoyed a close friendship. Indeed, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum includes in its collection a lengthy letter from Booth to Hicks, written on December 9, 1861, on the occasion of the birth of Booth's daughter, in which he also discusses the portrait. The work was praised by critics as a faithful depiction of the actor's theatrical brilliance. The artist subsequently made at least four smaller copies. The version owned by the National Portrait Gallery (dated 1863) is the largest, measuring 31 ½ inches in height. The three extant replicas all appear to be identical in size, measuring 14 x 10 inches. One version of this cabinet size is owned by the Hampden-Booth Theatre Library in New York; another was sold at Sotheby Parke-Bernet in 1974. While celebrating Booth's accomplishments, his full length likeness also enhanced Hicks's own reputation as a portraitist. Hicks retained the painting during his lifetime, exhibiting it in Philadelphia and New York in promotion of upcoming performances by his friend. Upon the artist's death in 1890, his widow donated it to the Century Association in New York. That work, which had measured 7 1/2 x 4 feet, was cut down in size by a conservator in 1969, while it was on loan to The Player's Club, so the full-length portrait survives only in the replicas in smaller scale made by Hicks. Thomas Hicks American, 1823-1890 The Caged Bird Signed T. Hicks and dated indistinctly 188...; with a chalk preparatory sketch of a child on the reverse Oil on board 26 3/8 x 21 1/2 inches Provenance: Private collection Best known as a prominent New York portraitist in the second half of the nineteenth century, Thomas Hicks also painted landscapes, still lifes, and genre scenes such as Interior: Children with Caged Robin. A partial date on the work indicates that it was rendered in the last decade of the artist's life. Contrasting with some of Hicks's more dramatic subjects-he was elected an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1841 on the basis of a painting entitled Death of Abel-this view of children in a quiet moment at home provides an informal glimpse into the life of another era. Hicks may have drawn his subject from his summer visits to Trenton Falls, New York, near Utica, where he and his wife had purchased a farmhouse that they named Thornwood. In Hicks's oeuvre are other genre scenes rendered during these visits, including The Musicale, Barber Shop, Trenton Falls, New York (1866, North Carolina Museum of Art) and The Moore Family at Trenton Falls (1854, private collection), the latter exhibited in 2011 at the Munson-Williams-Proctor. Thomas Hicks (American, 1823-1890) Edwin Booth as Iago Signed and dated "T Hicks/18..." l.r., identified on a type label affixed to the frame backing. Oil on canvas, 14 1/8 x 10 in. (35.8 x 25.5 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure. Provenance: Ex collection James Abbe, Jr., Oyster Bay, New York. N.B. The label affixed to the back gives the date of the painting as 1864, although the full date is no longer legible due to surface restoration to the l.r. corner. After Edwin Booth's critically acclaimed portrayal of Iago in Shakespeare's Othello in 1860, Thomas Hicks painted a full-length, life-sized portrait of the actor in that role. The artist subsequently made at least four small copies. In addition to the painting at hand, versions are located at the Hampden-Booth Theatre Library in New York, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, and the Century Association, New York. Another copy was sold by Adelson Galleries, Inc., 154 Newbury St., Boston in the late 1960s or early 1970s; the current owner is unknown. The painting being offered here may be the one sold at Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York, January 26, 1974, lot 550. Hicks enjoyed a close friendship with Booth, and the full length portrait served to bolster his own fame as an artist while celebrating Booth's talents. The portrait was not a commissioned piece, since Hicks kept the portrait himself. However he also lent it to the actor for display at upcoming performances, exhibiting it in Philadelphia and New York City. The success of the Iago portrait led Hicks to paint Booth in the Shakespearean roles of Hamlet, Shylock, and Richelieu as well. Theatrical portraiture was a bridge between the respected genre of history painting and more common genre of portraiture, and the Shakespearean theme endowed the work with higher regard due to its literary and historical associations.
