Victor Higgins Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, Genre Painter, Painter, b. 1884 - d. 1949

Artist Victor Higgins was an American painter of still life, figural motifs, and particularly landscapes, largely in oils or watercolors on canvas. In 1914, he embarked on a painting trip to Taos, New Mexico. This is where many of Victor Higgins' paintings are set, and Higgins essentially fathered the Taos art colony that exists to this day.

His paintings reflect the pastel and earthen tonality of the New Mexico environment, and he always continued to experiment stylistically. As an artist, Victor Higgins essentially began as an academic realist but shifted to myth- and fantasy-based modernism, and then to abstraction. Victor Higgins' artwork for sale may be rendered in a soft Impressionist style or a more angular Cubist style. Expand your collection with some of the many striking landscape paintings on offer at galleries and auctions.

        Victor Higgins (1884 - 1949) American

        Est: $3,500 - $4,500

Victor Higgins (1884 - 1949) Watercolor on paper, signed lower right, measures (14 x 20 inches) w/frame (25 x 30 inches) A key member of the Taos, New Mexico Society of Artists, Victor Higgins seemed much more influenced by modernist, abstract art than the other members although much of his work seemed realistic. From 1920, he was combining Impressionism with Cubism and painting mostly landscapes reduced to basic shapes, giving a sense of visual rhythm and showing geometric relationships of form and design. He was a native of a farming community in Indiana who was inspired towards art by an itinerant sign painter. He studied briefly at the Art Institute of Chicago, having left home for Chicago at the age of 15 and studying with E. Martin Hennings and Walter Ufer. For four years, he traveled in Europe and studied in Munich, and in 1912 returned to Chicago where an exhibition of his work at the Palette and Chisel Club earned him national attention and the esteemed Gold Medal.

VICTOR HIGGINS Rocky Mountain Landscape. Oil on canvas. 490x590 mm; 19 1/8x23 1/4 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto. Ex-collection private collection, Illinois. Higgins (1884-1949) was born in Shelbyville, Indiana, and left home at the age of 15 to study at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Carter Harrison, the mayor of Chicago from 1879-87, recognized Higgins' talent and sponsored him to study in Europe for two and a half years where he met fellow American artists Walter Ufer and Martin Hennings. When Harrison subsequently sent him to New Mexico on a painting trip he became greatly influenced by the light and landscape of the West; he eventually settled and joined the Taos Society of Artists, along with Ufer and Hennings. He primarily focused on western landscapes, that drew on Cubism with their multi-point perspectives and interlocking planes.

Victor Higgins (American, 1884-1949) Shadow Street (First Version) Oil on canvas 12-1/2 x 14-1/2 inches (31.8 x 36.8 cm) Signed lower right: Victor Higgins PROVENANCE: Private collection, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The present work reveals Victor Higgins's understanding and manipulation of light and shadow in order to convey the syncretistic, living landscape that is Taos. In Victor Higgins, an American Master by Dean Porter, another work titled Shadow Street is reproduced that similarly transports the viewer into Higgins's interpretation of Taos. In Shadow Street - First and Second Versions - the shadows of unseen trees and structures are stamped upon the man-made adobe walls and dusty streets, stretching the composition and casting the eye across the foreground to the slopping hills. The dance of sun-drenched adobe and the dusky shadows impress upon the viewer the intertwined pattern of nature and man in Taos. HID04901242017
