    Henry "Hy Jr." Hintermeister (American/New York, 1897-1970) oil on canvas Illustration Art painting titled "The Donkey Ride" depicting an older African American man helping a young boy ride a donkey, with a dog running in the grass below. The figures are surrounded by rural landscape under a cloudy blue sky. Signed "Hy Hintermeister" lower right. Housed in a simple ebonized wood frame with a gilt filet. Sight: 25 3/4" H x 23 1/2" W. Framed: 29 1/2" H x 27 1/2" W. Biography: Henry Hintermeister was born in New York to illustrator John Henry Hintermeister. The two worked together from the 1890s to the 1940s under the pseudonym Hy Hintermeister, producing over 1,000 illustrations. The pair's illustrative storytelling skills were often compared to Norman Rockwell. The Hintermeisters utilized this skill within a series of calendars depicting American history from 1775-1787, and Henry Hintermeister is most known for his American themed and animal paintings.     Hy (Henry) Hintermeister (1897-1970) Original 1938 sporting art calendar titled “Hold Em, Big Boy” from W. A Harvey Sporting Goods in Syracuse, NY, published by American Art Works, Inc. in Coshocton, Ohio. Calendar intact. Framed and matted measures 23 1/2"x32"x1/2". Weight 9 pds. PROVENANCE: A Private Charleston SC Estate. His father John Henry Hintermeister was an illustrator as well. Father and son often worked as a duo, from the 1890's to the 1940's, under the pseudonym Hy Hintermeister. They became well known producing over 1,000 of illustrations; John Henry and Henry were often compared to Norman Rockwell with their illustration storytelling. The duo produced a series of calendars depicting American history from 1775-1787. They used identical signatures making their illustrations nearly impossible to distinguish. As a solo artist, Henry Hintermeister is most know for American themed paintings as well as his paintings of animals.
