S. mit englischen und japanischen Erläuterungen zu den Tafeln. 30 Doppelblätter mit ganzseitigen Abbildungen (davon 7 farbige) von Holzschnitten. 36,2 cm x 26,8 cm. Blockbuchbindung. Flexibler OPappband (gebräunt) mit illustr. OSchutzumschlag (dieser mit Einrissen an den Gelenken, etwas lichtrandig).Tokio, Nippon Geijyutsu Hangasha, 1954. -- Hiratsuka Un’ichi (1895-1997) war Holzschnittkünstler und maßgeblicher Vertreter der Sōsaku-hanga-Bewegung, die den traditionellen Holzschnitt des 20. Jahrhunderts neu interpretierte. Im Gegensatz zum Ukiyo-e, bei dem Zeichner, Schnitzer und Drucker getrennte Rollen einnahmen, folgt Sōsaku-hanga den Prinzipien jiga (selbst gezeichnet), jikoku (selbst geschnitzt) und jizuri (selbst gedruckt), bei denen der Künstler also sämtliche Schritte eigenhändig ausführt - in Anlehnung an europäische Kunsttradition. Auch die Motivwahl erfuhr eine Wandlung: Anstelle traditioneller Kabukiszenen und Bijinga rückte die Sōsaku-hanga-Strömung zunehmend expressive und subjektive Darstellungen der individuellen Umwelt des Künstlers in den Vordergrund. – An einigen Stellen papierbedingt schwach gebräunt. Gut erhaltenes Album, die schönen Drucke der Tafelseiten mit sehr dekorativen Motiven.

Rakanji in the Rain (Yubakei) depicts the original temple that stood on the mountainside of Mt. Rakan before its destruction by fire in 1943. Red seal on lower left. Pencil signature and date on lower right: Un-ichi Hiratsuka 1935. Title in Japanese characters on lower left side. Exhibited in 2000 at Tokyo Station, catalogue #41. Horyu-ji Temple in Early Autumn, Nara, depicts a view of the oldest temple in the world with its Asuka-style pagoda. He explains: I sketched it before various repairs were made. The trees in the foreground are in a decorative style in order to make the tower stand out. CONDITION: Good. Un'ichi Hiratsuka was a Japanese print-maker born in Matsue, Shimane, Japan. He was one of the prominent leaders of the s?saku hanga movement in 20th century Japan. Between 1935 and 1944 Hiratsuka taught the first blockprinting course at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He moved to Washington D.C. in 1962 and spent thirty-three years in the United States. While living in Washington D.C., he was commissioned by three standing Presidents to carve woodblock prints of National Landmarks, which included The Lincoln Memorial, The Washington Monument and The Library of Congress which are in the collections of The National Gallery and Freer Gallery today. He ultimately returned to Japan in 1994. Hiratsuka was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the Japanese government in 1970. In 1991, the Hiratsuka Unichi Print Museum was opened in Suzaka, Nagano.
