Arnold Houbraken, Rest on the Flight into Egypt

Signed and dated centre left: A. Houbraken / 1686 Arnold Houbraken is known today mainly as a biographer because of his famous directory of Dutch painters. "De groote schouburgh der Nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen" (3 volumes, Amsterdam 1718-1719) is an important historical source. However, he was also a talented painter in his own right who received his initial training from Nicolaes Maes and later specialised in portraits and history paintings. The depiction of the Holy Family was a favourite subject of Houbraken. The sources (see Hofstede de Groot fiches in the RKD, The Hague) attest to several paintings by his hand, but they cannot be clearly assigned. The present painting is very different from a "Rest on the Flight into Egypt", which was sold on the art market in 2006 (Sotheby's, New York, 18.5.2006, lot 22). At first glance, the Holy Family could also be mistaken for a family of shepherds. However, the mother wears the colours of Mary - blue and red - and the child holds an apple to represent his role as the new Adam. The man does not correspond to the usual way of depicting Joseph in his clothing and brash posture. One can assume that the Calvinist Houbraken here approached Catholic iconography with slight irony.

ARNOLD HOUBRAKEN (Dordrecht, 1660 - Amsterdam, 1719). "The Fable of Alphaeus and Arethusa. Oil on canvas. The original canvas is preserved. It has repainting and restorations. Size: 102 x 90 cm; 121 x 109 cm (frame). In the Greek mythology, Areusa was a nymph who fled from her home in Arcadia under the sea and emerged as a source of fresh water in the island of Ortigia in Syracuse, Sicily. The myth of her transformation begins in Arcadia when she came across a clear stream and began to bathe, unaware that she was the god of the river Alpheus, which flowed from Arcadia through Elis to the sea. He fell in love during their encounter, but she fled after discovering his presence and intentions, as she wished to remain a chaste attendant of Artemis. After a long chase, she prayed to her goddess for protection. Artemis hid her in a cloud, but Alpheus was persistent. He began to sweat profusely from fear, and soon became a stream. Artemis then broke the ground allowing Arethusa another attempt to flee. Her stream travelled under the sea to the island of Ortigia, but Alpheus flowed across the sea to reach it and mingle with its waters. Houbraken began his education with the master Johannes de Haan, who introduced him to printmaking. He subsequently began his artistic career under Willem van Drielenburch, Jacobus Leveck and finally, four years with Samuel van Hoogstraten. Around 1709 he moved from Dordrecht to Amsterdam, where he developed his artistic career. Arnold Houbraken painted mythological and religious paintings, portraits and landscapes.

Houbraken was a Dutch painter and writer from Dordrecht, now remembered mainly as a biographer of Dutch Golden Age painters, as he is best know for this art historical work on the lives of Dutch painters.

Venus and Cupid and the death of Adonis Signed l.r. Oil on canvas, 43.2 x 35.1 cm Provenance: Private collection, the Netherlands N.B.: The myth of Venus and Adonis was first told in Ovid's Metamorphosis: Book X. Venus, the Greek goddess of love, was playing in the woods with her son Cupid, when she accidently hurt herself by one of his arrows. Before the wound could heal she witnessed Adonis, a young mortal even more handsome than the Gods. She immediately fell in love with him and forgot about her other lovers and her life on mount Olympus. She followed him and helped him hunting. She warned him not to hunt dangerous creatures, but in her absence Adonis provoked a wild boar and was killed. She came to his aid but was too late. This fatal moment is depicted in this painting by Arnold Houbraken. This tragical myth was also an inspiration to many other artists, like Titian (1487-1576) and Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). Adonis can still be seen in many gardens: Venus turned his blood into a flower, the anemone, to remind her of her grief and their love.

Oil on canvas Netherlands, 19th century In the style of Arnold Houbraken (1660-1719) - Dutch Painter Decorative gold-colored stucco frame Dimensions: 106 x 87 cm Provenance: Private collection, Southern Germany Baroque representation of a putto with skates as an allegory of winter in the style of the Dutch painter Arnold Houbraken, who used cherubs in his allegorical compositions The painting presented here was created in the 19th century and shows the charming figure of a putto as allegory of winter, performed in baroque style. The putto slides in skates over the frozen lake with landscape backdrop. Somewhat stubborn and with folded arms he holds himself to a draped curtain, his white loin cloth blowing loose around his body. Stylistically the painting is reminiscent of the compositions by Dutch painter Arnold Houbraken, who often involved the figure of the putto in his works. The painting is in age appropriate good condition. The surface shows slight craquelure and light abrasions in the upper right area of the sky. On the bottom right on finds a restoration, backed accordingly on verso. Otherwise overall of good impression. The image dimensions are 106 x 87 cm. Framed measurements 128 x 107 cm. The frame at the edges slightly bumped. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
