Her influences of Bonnard and Vuillard were informed by her time in Paris, she entered the Académie Delécluse in 1893 and from 1902 regularly exhibited at the Salon, showing as many as 147 works there during her lifetime. How is represented in the Tate Collection with her painting ‘L’Infirmière’ c.1914-18.

    Julia Beatrice How (British, 1867-1932) Nurse and baby signed 'B How' (lower right) oil on canvas h:71 w:58 cm Provenance: The Fine Art Society, London, where acquired by the present owner in 1987 (label verso) Other Notes: Beatrice How was born in Bideford, Devon to a well-known family of silversmiths. In 1893, she moved to Paris to study at the Académie Delecluse where she was introduced to the works of Rodin and Besnard. She established a workshop at Etaples and painted a variety of subjects - but always returned to her favourite, that of a mother and child. She exhibited around 147 works during her lifetime and after her death in 1932, a memorial exhibition was held at the New Burlington Galleries.

    Julia Beatrice How (Scottish, 1867-1932) Bebe Endormi signed lower right "B How" oil on board h:26 w:20.50 cm Provenance: Beaux Arts Gallery, 7 Bruton Place, London, W1; From the collection of Simon Hilton, Cambridge Other Notes: Julia Beatrice How was born in Bideford, Devon, and studied art under Sir Hubert Herkomer at Bushey and in Paris at the Academie Delacluse. Beatrice How lived for much of her life in France and exhibited there extensively where her work was held in high regard. She exhibited two works at the Royal Academy in 1924 and another painting 'L'Infirmiere' was shown there posthumously in 1936 (this work is now in the collection of Tate Britain having been acquired for the nation under the terms of the Chantrey Bequest). Her work also appeared regularly in the pages of Studio magazine in the 1920s; she was particularly known for her studies of babies but also produced numerous nude studies. Beatrice How's work is held in a number of public collections, especially in France, including the Musee du Luxembourg, Paris, the Musee d'Orsay, Paris, the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Lyon, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow. A memorial exhibition of her work was held in 1935 at The New Burlington Galleries in London, and in 1979 the Fine Art Society held a major show of her work in London.

She studied in Paris at the Académie Delacluse; where she was influenced by Lucien Simon and Carrière. How lived for most of her life in France, though she visited England every year. She primarily painted studies of women with babies, also occasional nudes and flowers. Exhibited at the Paris Salon, in the Galerie Georges Petit, the Galerie Armand Drouant, etc. Memorial exhibition at the New Burlington Galleries 1935, which afterwards toured Manchester and other provincial cities.
