(frame) Samuel Frost Johnson (born 1835) was active/lived in New York. Samuel Johnson is known for landscape, wildlife, and portrait. A native of New York, Samuel Johnson was a painter in academic style who spent many years studying and exhibiting in Europe including Dusseldorf, Antwerp, and Paris. In the 1870s, he returned to the United States where he became professor of Art and Science at Fordham University and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1869, the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Academy of Art in the 1870s.

NOTES A native of New York, Samuel Frost Johnson spent years studying and exhibiting abroad, beginning in Dsseldorf and relocating to Antwerp and Paris beginning in 1859. The artist did return to the United States in the 1870s to become professor of Art and Science at Fordham University and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Works by Samuel Frost Johnson have been exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1869, the National Academy of Design of New York in 1870, 1877-81 and the Brooklyn Academy of Art throughout the 1870s.
