Benjamin Katz Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1939 -

Born in Antwerp, Benjamin Katz moved to Berlin at the age of 17. Here, he studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste. In 1963, at his first gallery opening, works by Georg Baselitz were seized by the German public prosecution department because of indecent content. Katz remained being active as a gallery owner and he is still a close friend of Georg Baselitz. In 1972, he moved to Cologne, where he worked as a chronicler and essayist. Since 1976, he works as a freelance photographer. He is mainly known for his photographs of art and culture events. From 2006 until 2008, he taught photography at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf. He took part in a number of national and international exhibitions.

The artist is depicted through a sheet of glass with a slightly bowed head. His left hand covers his face. The artist is depicted in his typical ‘uniform’ wearing a fishing waistcoat and the omnipresent hat. The photograph is titled, dated and signed verso in pencil ‘Joseph Beuys, Köln 1981. West Kunst, Abz. 1988, Benjamin Katz‘ with the artist stamp ‘Benjamin Katz, Cologne‘ underneath. The photograph shows very little signs of use and is in very good condition. Katz remained being active as a gallery owner and he is still a close friend of Georg Baselitz. In 1972, he moved to Cologne, where he worked as a chronicler and essayist. Since 1976, he works as a freelance photographer. He is mainly known for his photographs of art and culture events. From 2006 until 2008, he taught photography at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf.
