Rel. de l'époque en demi-veau, dos à 5 nerfs, mors frottés, coins émoussés Henry Wilson was in command of the British East India Company packet ship Antelope, when it shipwrecked off Ulong Island near Koror Island in Palau (1783). Wilson's collection of curiosities, that were exchanged with the ibedul (local ruler) and form the earliest known group of Palau artefacts, are held by the British Museum. George Keate wrote an account of Wilson's experiences in 1788, a book heavily influenced by the current conceptions concerning the "noble savage". The book became quite popular

The entire crew managed to get safely ashore, where they were well treated by the natives and eventually managed to build a small vessel from the wreck, in which they reached Macao. They took Prince Lee Boo, one of King Abba Thulle's sons, with them to England, where he made a very good impression. Unhappily, in spite of all precautions, he soon died of smallpox." Hill

Cleveland Row, London, 1803, with two extra sheets of paper bound in, the first reading 'Mr. Wilson who presented this narrative to your mother was the son of Captain Wilson who accompanied his father & mentioned in the list of the ships crew. of Lee Boo I can speak from personal knowledge of him he having frequently dined at our house with Captain Wilson who was a particular friend of our family, that he was a most intelligent amiable young man & that the account presented of him is nothing more than is strictly true & I am sure I may say so of the whole; as Captain W was a man whose account may be depended on & I have no doubt you will be pleased in reading it. Fourth edition, Princess Kaiulani's copy, with her ownership signature on the first page of the introduction. A fitting artifact from a Princess known for her intelligence. Lacking two portraits, occasional minor foxing, small dampstain to title/frontis, worming to gutter margin at end. Second edition. This copy with an early 16-line manuscript postscript to the account (trimmed at bottom of page with one line apparently lost). The postscript relates the contents of a letter from an officer on board the Panther who visited Pelew after Wilson's departure. It describes the monarch's reaction to news of the death of Lee Boo and the fate of the Englishman Blanchard who was left on Pelew at his own request. Provenance: John Thurlow Dering; Sir Samuel Hoare (armorial bookplates).
