        MARYLAND, 1850-1937 A pair of Egyptian Revival bronze bookends by American sculptor Ephraim Keyser. Titled "The Wireless", the bookends when conjoined depict a nude male whispering into the ear of Sphinx as a nude woman listens on the other end. The work is signed "E. Keyser" and titled "The Wireless" on the base of the male bookend, marked "Roman Bronze Works, N.Y." on back of female bookend.

        EPHRAIM KEYSER (American, 1850-1937) THE ROSE inscribed E. Keyser; copyright 1896 with founders mark BUREAU BROS; bronze with brown and green patina; height: 56 inches; Note: Ephraim Keyser was born in Baltimore, MD. He studied with Widmann at the Royal Academy of Munich and Albert Wolff at the Royal Academy in Berlin. In 1876, his figure of "Psyche", now at the Cincinnati Art Museum, won a silver medal at the Berlin Academy Exhibition, as well as the Michael Beerche prize. In 1877 he returned to Baltimore to become an instructor at the Maryland Institute of Art. He is known for his numerous commemorative monuments such as his memorial to President Chester Arthur, Albany, NY and "Bust of Sidney Lanier" located at Johns Hopkins University.
