Meijer, 'A Dictionnary of Dutch and Flemish still life painters working in oil, 1525-1725', Leyde, 2003, p. 125 Commentaire : D'abord stupéfait par cet impressionnant bouquet de fleurs, l'œil du spectateur s'accroche à l'aile d'un papillon orangé, glisse sur la douceur d'un pétale de coquelicot avant de descendre le long d'une tige vert tendre. Circulant dans une multitude de couleurs, il termine son voyage en frôlant les pétales fanés d'une rose qui tombe avec délicatesse. Issu d'une dynastie de peintres, l'auteur de ce spectaculaire bouquet de fleurs, Cornelis Kick, dévoua entièrement sa carrière à la peinture de fleurs dont il maîtrisait les ressorts et qui fit sa renommée. Fils du peintre Simon Kick, spécialisé en portraits et scènes militaires, Cornelis grandit à Amsterdam avant de partir se former auprès de Jan Davidsz. de Heem, alors certainement installé à Anvers. Dès 1650, il est connu comme peintre de fleurs dans sa ville natale. D'après Arnold Houbraken, peintre et biographe néerlandais, Kick avait pu, par l'intermédiaire de son beau-père, se rendre régulièrement dans un petit jardin à l'extérieur des portes d'Amsterdam. Accompagné de ses élèves, il s'y plaisait à peindre les fleurs que l'on retrouve dans son œuvre, et ce toujours à la manière de son premier maître. L'artiste fait ici preuve d'une véritable science de la composition. Posé sur un entablement de pierre, disposé devant un fond d'une grande sobriété, ce bouquet de fleurs luxuriant est exemplaire dans l'équilibre des masses et des couleurs. Les espèces représentées n'étaient pas toutes épanouies à la même saison et cet agencement provient sans doute directement de l'imagination de Cornelis Kick. Dans la mouvance des natures mortes hollandaises du XVIIe siècle, l'artiste allie une admiration évidente pour la beauté de la nature, une attention toute particulière à la vérité botanique et une notion de vanité. Celle-ci est ainsi suggérée dans la représentation du cycle de vie d'une fleur, de l'instant où elle apparaît bouton, à celui où elle s'épanouit avant de se faner et de se déliter. Composition à la symbolique ambigüe, elle peut se faire ode à la nature pour celui qui l'observe, comme rappel du caractère éphémère de la vie terrestre. Chef d'œuvre de délicatesse et de précision, ce tableau révèle le talent de Cornelis Kick. Placé dans un vase à peine perceptible, ce bouquet est présenté presque pour lui-même, dans une éclatante harmonie de couleurs. Estimation 150 000 - 200 000 €

NOTE Still lifes by Cornelis Kick are very rare, although they are his highest prized pictures. He began his career by following in his father's footsteps and painting portraits. It is only later in his career, after becoming familiar with and impressed by the work of Jan Davidz. de Heem, that he started working in this new genre. Although his works are sparse due to the meticulous attention he paid to each detail of his compositions, he rapidly became famed for his representations of tulips and hyacinths in particular. This painting is similar in style to a signed work in the Daisy Linda Ward colection, The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (see E. Gamar-Koeltzsch, Holländische Stillebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert, 1995, vol. 2, p. 557, no. 195/3, reproduced).
