      • A carved wood figure of Saint John the Evangelist by Hans Klocker and workshop
        May. 21, 2022

A carved wood figure of Saint John the Evangelist by Hans Klocker and workshop

        Est: €25,000 - €30,000

A figure of the saint standing in a gently swaying pose, designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. He is depicted in his traditional youthful and beardless guise, holding a book as an additional identifying attribute. The work's sculptural volume is emphasised especially by the design of the cloak worn around the shoulders, which encompasses the figure with a slender strip of fabric at the front and deeply carved hollow folds on either side. The characteristic rendering, especially of the hair and facial features, allows the work to be attributed to the South Tyrolese sculptor Hans Klocker and his workshop, with a possible date of around 1480.

Hans Klocker, A Pair of Altar Reliefs, Bressanone, 1485/90

        Est: €32,000 - €41,600

Presumably limewood with polychrome painting and gilding; mounted on chipboard covered with green velvet Brixen/South Tyrol, around 1485/90 Attributed to Hans Klocker (before 1474 - after 1500) - Austrian sculptor of the late Gothic period A pair of female saints in half-relief, including Mary Magdalene, which were originally attached to a winged altar The work is accompanied by an expertise of the museum director Dr. Albrecht Miller from Munich (dated November 17, 2014) Literature: cf. Gisela Scheffler, Hans Klocker, Innsbruck 1964, Cat. 14 and Cat. 31 Dimensions of figures: circa 40 x 15 cm Good condition Provenance: Collection Rudolf Kremayr, Perechtoldsdorf, Vienna; private collection, The Netherlands A finest carved work in the typical late Gothic style Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 65,000 Euro The reliefs were probably attached on the insides of the predella wings of an altar shrine or on the insides of the wings of a small altar. Similar figures by Klocker can be found on the altars in Pinzon, Villnöß Pardell, and on the Tramin altar in the Bavarian National Museum. Condition: The figures are in good condition according to age, showing some losses in the paint and gilding. The inspection under UV light reveals a small area of retouching to the face of the left figure. Both figures are approximately 40 x 15 cm in size. The chipboard measures circa 44 x 40 x 6 cm. Hans Klocker (before 1474 - after 1500) The Austrian sculptor Hans Klocker is first documented in 1747 in Sterzing and then from 1478 to 1498 in Brixen. A large number of works are, mainly altars for churches in Brixen and Bozen, are attributed to him in written sources. His most famous work is the Traminer altar, which is preserved today in the Bavarian National Museum in Munich. Most likely, Klocker headed is own large workshop, where altars were created, including sculptures and paintings. (cko) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Hans Klocker, vor 1474 Gais - nach 1500, zug.

        Est: €50,000 - €70,000

Hans Klocker, vor 1474 Gais - nach 1500, zug., PAAR HOCHRELIEFS MÄNNLICHER HEILIGENFIGUREN Höhe der Relieffiguren: 72 bzw. 70 cm. (880311)
