    • RICHARD KNECHT (1887- ?). HEXEN-SABBAT. 45x30 inches, 114x76 cm. DBC Wolf und Sohn, Munich.
      Feb. 05, 2009

RICHARD KNECHT (1887- ?). HEXEN-SABBAT. 45x30 inches, 114x76 cm. DBC Wolf und Sohn, Munich.

      Est: $1,500 - $2,000

RICHARD KNECHT (1887- ?) HEXEN-SABBAT. 45x30 inches, 114 1/2x76 cm. DBC Wolf und Sohn, Munich. Condition A-: tape stains; pen and minor repaired tears in margins. Knecht studied at the Munich Academy and his paintings were first shown at the Secession exhibition in 1914. The Hexen-Sabbat was a yearly ball held by Munich artists and bohemians. The event took its pagan name from the old German tale of the "Hexentanz auf dem Brocken," in which on every Sabbath witches would dance around the devil who lived at the summit of a mountain. For this image Knecht playfully illustrates a ring of costumed revelers atop a peak, dancing around an apparition of the devil. Green wisps of sulfur and brimstone are rising, like the stamen from some hedonistic flower. DFP III 1836.

    • RICHARD KNECHT (1887-?)Hexen-Sabbat.
      Nov. 11, 2007

      RICHARD KNECHT (1887-?)Hexen-Sabbat.

      Est: $1,400 - $1,700

RICHARD KNECHT (1887-?) Hexen-Sabbat. Knecht connects with his playfully demonic side in this poster for a midwinter student soiree with ghoulish abandon. The German word 'hexensabbat' translates as 'esbat,' which is a meeting of a coven of witches. And though this confederation of prancing specters certainly seems harmless enough, it's a pretty decent bet that all those in attendance had one hell of a time. A producer of very few posters, Knecht was a sculptor and painter who studied in both Munich and Stuttgart. His works were shown in the 1914 Munich Secession exhibition. Rare! Dr. C. Wolf u. Sohn, Munchen
