      KONOSHIMA OKOKU: A KAKEMONO OF A LANDSCAPE WITH BIRDS By Konoshima Okoku (1877-1938), signed Okoku with seal Okoku Japan, Taisho (1912-1926) to Showa (1926-1989) period, early 20th century Ink on paper. Mounted as a hanging scroll on a silk brocade frame, with antler handles. Freely painted illustrating a mountainous landscape at dusk with a descending flock of birds. Signed to the lower-right OKOKU. One seal Okoku. SIZE 118.8 x 26.6 cm (image), 201 x 38.2 cm (including mounting) Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and creasing. The brocade frame with usual traces of wear and age. With an inscribed wood tomobako. Konoshima Okoku (1877-1938) was born in Kyoto and studied painting under Imao Keinen (1845-1924). His paintings were continuously accepted for Bunten and Teiten exhibitions. He excelled in the depiction of animals, landscapes, and bird-and-flower paintings. Museum comparison: A related painting by Konoshima Okoku, dated to the early 20th century, is in the collection of the British Museum, museum number 1994,0525,0.1. Auction comparison: Compare a related painting of a hen with chicks by Konoshima Okoku, dated to the early 20th century, sold at Bonham's, Fine Japanese Art, 14 May 2015, London, lot 239 (sold for GBP 1,375).
