Anton Kothgasser, Vienna 1769-1851, "Night Glass"

      Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Anton Kothgasser, Vienna 1769-1851 “Nachtglas” A highly significant Ranftbecher from around 1820/25 Transparent painted glass, with a view of the moon surrounded by clouds and a starry sky Silver-plated rim and edge in the base, patinated Height 10.8 cm, diameter 8.1 cm Cf. Wien Museum, Inv. No. 194937 This museum-quality “Nachtglas” (night glass) by Anton Kothgasser, one of the most important glass painters of the early 19th century, is an outstanding example of the high level of artistry and elegance that characterizes his works. Kothgasser, who worked in Vienna, perfected the technique of enamel painting on glass and became particularly known for his delicate, detailed miniature paintings on beautifully shaped glass objects. This exquisite Ranftbecher, created around 1820/25, shows the characteristic delicacy and precision of Kothgasser's hand. The glass painting often depicts symbolic scenes, embellished with filigree and gold accents. The glass itself is kept in a simple, elegant style that perfectly showcases the delicate painting. This exceptional Ranftbecher is one of the few independent designs by Anton Kothgasser and shows an enchanting representation of the night sky. Surrounded by delicate clouds, a glowing moon stands out, while a clear starry sky completes the picture. Kothgasser's masterful enamel painting gives the glass a dreamy atmosphere that transports the viewer to a serene, nocturnal landscape. This heavenly scene, artfully rendered on the delicate glass, reflects not only the precision of the artist, but also the elegance and romance that always resonate in his work. These artistic designs made the glasses highly sought after by collectors. Today, Kothgasser's works are highly valued for their rarity and artistic value. This particular piece is a work of art that reflects the sophistication and elegance of Viennese glass painting from the early 19th century. Provenance: Private collection, Lower Austria

Glass "Elles sont toutes pour Vous" with pansy décor

      Est: €2,000 - €3,000

GLASS "ELLES SONT TOUTES POUR VOUS" WITH PANSY DÉCOR. Kothgasser, Anton. Wien Date: Around 1815-20. Technique: Uncolored glass, partly stained yellow, gold and transparent painting decor. Description: Cylindrical beaker shape with slightly drawn-in wall. Yellow stained star on the bottom. Under the gilt rim a delicate gold leaf bordure on yellow stained ground, below it a thin wavy ribbon. The wall decorated with six scattered pansies with leaves and two buds. In addition, a diagonally arranged, yellow stained ribbon with brown contours and gold inscription "Elles sont toutes pour Vous". Measurement: Height 10,5cm, ø 7,2cm. Literature: - Kovacek, Michael (ed.): Glas aus 5 Jahrhunderten, exhib. cat. On Anton Kothgasser from p.134. - Pazaurek, Gustav E. and Philippovich, Eugen von: Gläser der Empire und Biedermeierzeit. Brunswick 1976, p.155. Anton Kothgasser (1769-1851) also originally worked as a porcelain painter and had been employed at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in his hometown of Vienna since 1784. In 1811, Gottlob Samuel Mohn moved to the imperial city to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. He also worked on the advancement of transparent enamel colors and was probably in contact with the Viennese manufactory in an advisory role. It can therefore be assumed that Mohn and Kothgasser met in this context. To earn a living, Mohn continued to paint glasses, which soon enjoyed great popularity in Vienna. Kothgasser, who recognized the potential of this line of business, also began to work with transparent enamel on glass as a sideline, which was later to become his main field of work. The commission lists of some Viennese dealers only suggest how extremely productive Anton Kothgasser must have been. The artist, who never ran a workshop or a sales outlet of his own, was sometimes assisted by other painters. Otherwise he would probably not have been able to meet the demand for the popular small works of art. Kothgasser, whose glass is still highly valued by collectors today, is considered one of the most important glass painters of his time. Explanations to the Catalogue
