Fong Lai (India,China,1839-1910) oil painting antique

      Est: $2,900 - $3,700

ARTIST: Fong Lai (Chinese, Indian, 1839 - 1910) NAME: Sailing Ship Ecclefechan YEAR: 1897 MEDIUM: oil on canvas CONDITION: Relined. Three repaired tears (3" longest). Minor craquelure. Some scattered inpainting in bottom part. SIGHT SIZE: 25 x 35 inches / 63 x 88 cm FRAME SIZE: 31 x 41 inches / 78 x 104 cm SIGNATURE: lower right PROVENANCE: Property from Lawry's The Prime Rib, located in the historic L. Hamilton McCormick Mansion, Chicago, Illinois SKU#: 118300 US Shipping $149 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Lai Fong was one of a group of Chinese marine painters who worked for the captains and merchants of the oriental trade painting portraits of their ships in oil on canvas. While most worked in Canton, Whampoa, Hong Kong or Shanghai, only one, Lai Fong, worked outside of China in the Indian port of Calcutta. Although many China Trade painters signed or labeled their canvases, Lai Fong was one of the few to regularly date them. From these dates we can see an active painter who worked from the middle 1870s through about 1905. During that period he painted vessels from across the globeв generally in a 26 x 35 inch format. Lai Fong successfully melded the conventions of European and American ship portrait painting with the China Trade oil painting style that developed after 1800. That he was successful and in great demand is indicated by the large number of his paintings that exist today.

Registered in Liverpool at 3,178 tons gross and measuring 327 feet in length with a 461/2 foot beam, she only sailed under the Red Ensign until 1899 when she was sold to G.J.H. Siemers of Hamburg. Renamed Thekla to replace another vessel of that name lost the previous year, she proved a very successful addition to Siemers' fleet which operated her until she ran ashore and was wrecked on 6 th July 1911 on Cape San Juan, Staten Island, off the south-eastern tip of Argentina. Six of her crew were lost almost at once when one of her boats capsized and the remaining survivors were eventually rescued after two months on the bleak rocks of Staten Island in appalling winter weather.

The four masted sailing ship County of Peebles in rough seas signed and dated 'Lai Fong./Calcutta/1900' (lower right) oil on canvas 10 x 16 in. (25.4 x 40.6 cm.) NOTES Lai Fong, a painter active between 1890 and 1910, emigrated from Hong Kong to Calcutta where he became a leading pier head painter. As a result of his position, Fong became renowned for the large number of ship portraits he produced during his career. Fong rarely featured coastal landscapes in his work preferring to render the ships on their ocean bound leg. The County of Peebles, a four masted iron ship, was built in 1875 by Barclay, Cule & Co., in Glasgow. Her dimensions were 266'6" x 38'7" x 23'4" with a tonnage of 1691 GRT. She was rigged with royal sails above double top and single topgalant sails. The total sail area was 306010 square feet. She was launched in July 1875 from the shipyard of Barclay, Curle & Co., for R & J Craig, Glasgow. Her first master was Captain A. Miller. Throughout the 1880's and 1890's the County of Peebles sailed between Scotland, England and India on a variety of shipping routes. In 1887 the title of ships master was transffered to Captain J. Murdoch. In 1898 she was sold to the Chilean navy and ranamed Munoz Gamero. Shortly after the sale, the County of Peebles was beached for use as a dock and breakwater in Punta Arenas. The vessel has no been restored with the lower masts and deck remaining while the interior has been preserved by the Chilean navy for use as an entertainment area.

As a result of his position, Fong became renowned for the large number of ship portraits he produced during his career. Fong rarely featured coastal landscapes in his work preferring to render the ships on their ocean bound leg. The Lynton was built by Evans of Liverpool in 1894. She was a huge steel four master registered at 2,351 tons gross and measured 300 feet in length with a 491/2- foot beam. For the first five years of her life she was used in the Calcutta jute trade which is where Lai Fong would have painted her. Lai Fong was a Chinese ship's portrait painter who was active in Calcutta from 1870-1900. This larger than life usual painting is a good example and typical of his work.

dated 1893, oil on canvas 26 x 35 1/2 in. (66 x 90.1 cm.) The four-masted iron barque "Glenericht" was built by T. Royden & Sons of Liverpool for L.H. MacIntyre, also of that city, in 1885. Registered at 2426 tons gross (2250 net), she measured 289½ feet in length with a 44 foot beam and operated as a general trader, often to India and the Far East, for three successive Liverpool owners until 1907 when she was sold to H. Bode of Hamburg who renamed her "Mariechen". After three years under German colours, she was sold to Robert Mattsson of Mariehamn, one of a small group of Finnish ship-owners led by the far-sighted Gustav Erikson, who, between them, dominated the twilight years of commercial sailing ships between the two World Wars. It suited Mattsson to retain "Mariechen's" new name and, surviving the Great War, during which she was particularly profitable, she became a frequent sight in the Panama Canal in the early 1920s when on passage home from Tocopilla, Chile, carrying cargoes of nitrates. Sold to ship-breakers in 1923, she was scrapped in Holland the same year.
