PABLO LEGOT (Luxembourg, 1598 - Cadiz, 1671). "Adoration of the Shepherds. Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. With report by Enrique Valdivieso. Antique frame. Measurements: 145 x 104 cm; 157 x 115 cm (frame). Pablo Legot was a painter of Luxembourgish origin who worked in the Sevillian school of painting. His style moved within the naturalism practised in Seville by Juan de Roelas and Francisco Herrera el Viejo. In his works he closely followed the aesthetic precepts of José de Ribera, whom he knew from engravings of the time, whose works he imitated in the signed Saint Jerome in Seville Cathedral and in some of the figures in the Adoration of the Shepherds in Cadiz Cathedral. On this occasion Legot offers us a purely religious scene, a genre in which he always worked, in which he approaches the theme of adoration in a naturalistic manner. The shepherds, devoid of any eloquent or ornate gestures, kneel or bow silently around the child, whose small body wrapped in white cloths rests on a bed of wicker and straw. The Virgin prepares to cover the Child with the cloths, while Saint Joseph observes the scene in the background. Jesus thus occupies the centre of the composition, and the contrasting lighting helps to arrange the figures and direct the viewer's gaze to each corner of the crib. The humanity that pervades the scene allowed the faithful to identify with it, an intention that would characterise Spanish religious art from the Counter-Reformation onwards. The divine elements are reduced to a minimum, with only a Glory break in the upper part, with two child angels attending the event. The 17th century saw the arrival of the Baroque style in the Sevillian school, a style that would reach its full maturity at the end of the century, and also throughout the 18th century. With the new style came the triumph of naturalism over Mannerist idealism, a loose style and many other aesthetic liberties. At this time the school reached its greatest splendour, both in terms of the quality of the works and the primordial status of Sevillian Baroque painting. Thus, during the transition to the Baroque period, we find Juan del Castillo, Antonio Mohedano and Francisco Herrera el Viejo, whose works already displayed the rapid brushstrokes and crude realism of the style, and Juan de Roelas, who introduced Venetian colourism. The middle of the century saw the fullness of the period, with figures such as Zurbarán, a young Alonso Cano and Velázquez. Finally, in the last third of the century we find Murillo and Valdés Leal, founders in 1660 of an Academy where many of the painters active in the 18th century were trained, such as Meneses Osorio, Sebastián Gómez, Lucas Valdés and others. Francisco Antolínez should also be mentioned among these names.

Pablo Legot (attrib.).

Attirbuted to Pablo Legot Marche 1598 - Cádiz 1671 Hercules and the Lion of Nemea Oil on canvas This work is very similar to the Legot's Saint John the Baptist, housed in the parish Santa María la Blanca in Los Palacios and Villafranca, made between 1631 and 1636. Hercules is the mythical founder of Cadiz, so it could have been made circa 1635, when the artist moved there on the occasion of his appointment as Fiscal Marshal of the Royal Admiralty of that city. 150.7x131.6 cm
