Auguste Claude Simon Legrand (1765 - 1815 ) after Unknown (18th century): Geneviève de Brabant, 19th century, Vernis Mou Technique: Vernis Mou on Paper Inscription: Unterhalb der Darstellung signiert "Peinte par M. Gérard / Gravé par Augustin le Grand" und betitelt "Geneviève de Brabant vouée à la mort". Date: 19th century Description: This beautiful depiction shows Genoveva of Brabant (allegedly around 730 - 750), who was condemned to death; according to tradition, she was the daughter of a Duke of Brabant and the wife of Count Palatine Siegfried. However, it is unlikely that she actually existed as a historical person. According to legend, when Count Palatine Siegfried went to war, Genoveva was coveted by his governor Golo. However, the faithful Genoveva spurned his advances, whereupon he accused her of adultery with a cook and sentenced her to death. The executioner spared her, whereupon she lived in a cave with her newborn son for six years until her husband Sigfried finally found her.
