      • 1806 Lithograph Portrait of Carl Linnaeus, Pioneering Swedish Botanist and Father of Taxonomy
        Aug. 07, 2024

1806 Lithograph Portrait of Carl Linnaeus, Pioneering Swedish Botanist and Father of Taxonomy

        Est: $300 - $400

Carl Linnaeus London, ca. 1806 1806 Lithograph Portrait of Carl Linnaeus, Pioneering Swedish Botanist and Father of Taxonomy Poster A handsome lithograph engraving measuring 15" x 25", published by Robert Thornton, London, May 1, 1806. Moderate foxing at margins, less so at middle, else very good. This print features an oval portrait of Linnaeus, surrounded by garlands and supported by three putti and an angel. The text at bottom reads: "Carolus Linnaeus, Knight of the Polar Star, First Physician to the King, Professor of Botany in the University at Upsal, &c &c. From the Original Picture in the Possession of Aylmer Bourke Lambert Esq. Vice President of the Linnaean Society." Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) attended Uppsala University as a student before teaching there after 1730, then appointed rector at the university after two decades of teaching, conducting original field research, and producing a number of influential publications. He also became the chair of botany at Uppsala. Linnaeus's outdoor classes were extremely popular and he had an easy rapport with his adoring students. Uppsala University, located in the eponymous city located some 70 km northwest of Stockholm, is Sweden's oldest university, established in 1477. Linnaeus's greatest contribution to science was developing a classification system for animals, plants, and minerals; his 1735 Systema Naturae introduced its principal ideas. Linnaeus is thus known as the "father of modern taxonomy." This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.

Zimmer, Hans Peter: Under the Lemon Tree

        Est: €8,000 - €10,000

"Under the Lemon Tree" Acryl auf Leinwand. 1986. 135,5 x 115 cm. (HP Zimmer, in: Künstler.
