A governor of the Harrow School, Rushout allowed the students at the school to use the grounds for recreational purposes. Perhaps he commissioned the painting as a way of commemorating a place that was personally meaningful. After 1855, the painting joined the distinguished collection of important old master paintings (including Bassano, Bronzino, Caravaggio, Giotto, Durer, Leonardo da Vinci, Poussin, Raphael, Titian, and Veronese) and then-contemporary British paintings displayed by the Baron at Thirlestaine House, his Greek Revival home in Cheltenham, which he opened to the public.
