Arnold Lobel never explicitly confirmed that the characters Frog and Toad were representative of his own experiences as a gay man. However, the series has been interpreted by many as having themes that resonate with LGBTQ+ experiences, particularly in the context of friendship and love between two male characters. Lobel came out to his family in 1974, four years after the first Frog and Toad book was published.

Arnold Lobel (American, 1933-1987) Frog and Toad, possible poster illustration,

        Est: $20,000 - $30,000

Arnold Lobel (American, 1933-1987) Frog and Toad, possible poster illustration, circa 1975-79 Watercolor and pencil on paper 20 x 15-3/4 inches (50.8 x 40.0 cm) (sheet) Signed lower right: Arnold Lobel PROVENANCE: The artist; Acquired by the present owner from the above. EXHIBITED: The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Amherst, Massachusetts, "Seeking a State of Grace: The Art of Arnold Lobel," March 22-June 15, 2008. During his career Arnold Lobel wrote and/or illustrated over seventy books for children. To his illustrating credit, he had a Caldecott Medal book -- Fables (1981) -- and two Caldecott Honor Books-- His Own Frog and Toad are Friends (1971) and Hildilid's Night by Cheli Duran Ryan (1972). For his writing, he received a Newbery Honor Award for Frog and Toad Together (1973). Though he was a born storyteller, Lobel began making up stories extemporaneously to entertain his fellow second-graders in Schenectady, New York, where he grew up in the care of his grandparents. Mr. Lobel called himself a "lucky amateur" in terms of his writing. Viewing himself as a professionally trained illustrator (he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute), he said, "I know how to draw pictures. With writing, I don't really know what I'm doing. It's very intuitive." In addition to the Frog and Toad books, Owl at Home, Mouse Tales, The Book of Pigericks, and many other popular books he created, Lobel also illustrated other writers' texts that captured his fancy. He viewed this as "something different and challenging." Often his illustrations for those books showed a different aspect of his personality and his artistic expertise, ranging from his meticulous dinosaurs in Dinosaur Time by Peggy Parish to his chilling pen-and-ink drawings in Nightmares: Poems to Trouble Your Sleep by Jack Prelutsky, about which the writer of Booklist said, "Young readers will be amazed that the gentle Lobel of Frog and Toad fame can be so comfortably diabolic." Frog and Toad is executed on an unusually large sheet for the artist; therefore, it is possibly a poster design. The simplicity of the imagery makes the work equally a candidate for an unpublished cover drawing, although there is no record of this published composition. Aside from the large paper size and scene complexity, Frog and Toad is also noteworthy in that it is a rare full-color work by the artist. (Most Frog and Toad illustrations were created in black line, with color separations used for printing.) Heritage Auctions is honored to present this most ambitious, fully realized Frog and Toad illustration to the auction block. HID01801242017

        Est: $1,200 - $1,500

LOBEL, ARNOLD. 1933-1987. Watercolor drawing of Toad over message, Dear Alexandra..., a one-page illustrated autograph letter to a child, 273 x 210 mm, n.d., light crease, framed. Provenance: Morton Schindel. WITH: ZEMACH, MARGOT. Mixed media painting of a Russian feast, 229 x 305 mm, inscribed in crayon upper left corner by the artist and her husband and collaborator Harve Zemach: For Mort with Affection Margot and Harve July, 65; AND WITH: UNGERER, TOMI. Dear Morton..., one-page decorated letter in ink to Morton Schindel with envelope, 298 x 203 mm, n.d., crease; with three Ungerer books, one inscribed to Schindel. Morton Schindel (1918-2016) founded Weston Woods Studios in 1953, to produce animated films and filmstrips for use in schools. The first of his nearly 500 titles was an adaptation of James Daugherty’s Caldecott Honor Book Andy and the Lion (1938) released in 1954; and he tried to film every other Caldecott Medal Winner after that. Lobel, Zemach and Ungerer were just a few of the many other artists with whom he worked; and these tributes to the producer demonstrate the great affection they held for him. For example, Ungerer writes: Dear Morton...Just a few lines to say that I do hope that We shall meet eventually. Here or There or Anywhere ... In the meantime with my very best and Friendliest whatnots T. Ungere ... ei. He appends the note with a little bird laying an egg on the flourish of his signature. Lobel assures a young fan: ...I’m happy to hear that you have been reading and enjoying my Frog and Toad books. Here is a sketch of Toad for you and an F[rog] and T[oad] fan club card. Your friend, Arnold Lobel. The fate of the Frog and Toad Fan Club card remains a mystery.
