Mikhail Vasilevich Lomonosov (1711-1765) Kratkoye rukovodstvo k krasnorechiyu. [1765]

      Est: £4,000 - £6,000

LOMONOSOV, Mikhail Vasilevich (1711-1765) . Kratkoye rukovodstvo k krasnorechiyu [A quick guide to eloquence]. St Petersburg: Imperatorskaya Akademia Nauk, 1748 [recte 1765]. First edition, the corrected issue which includes the author’s alterations, of Lomonosov’s enormously influential Rhetoric. Both issues are extremely rare. This is the hugely influential first scientific work of rhetoric in the Russian language, preceded only either by works of religious content or translations from Latin or Greek. Lomonosov’s pioneering manual influenced the theory of rhetoric throughout the 18th and the 19th century. The printing history of this work is complex. Four issues (or indeed editions) appeared with the year 1748 in the printer’s statement. Lomonosov gave work in batches to the printers; the typography was damaged by fire in 1748 before the first ‘issue’ had been finished’; paper shortages affected the production well after the fire – and throughout the publishing of the manual Lomonosov had the means to refine and modify his text. One of the issue points which allow for an issue statement is to be found in p.2, last line of §4 which reads ‘these requirements’ (for an in-depth study of the issues, see A. A. Kostin, K. N. Lemeshev, Mikhail Lomonosov’s “Short Manual in Rhetoric”: The History of the First Edition from 1748, ‘Slovene’, Vol 6, No 2, 2017) . ABPC/RBH show no record of any edition of this work. CK3744; Kilgour 654. Octavo (200 x 118mm) . (Occasional light spotting and staining, some ink staining on title) . Russian contemporary tree calf, paneled spine tooled in blind, morocco lettering-piece (head of spine chipped, corners worn, surface lightly rubbed) . Provenance: unnamed inscription dated 28 April 1776 – small identified rectangular stamp and ink numbering to rear free endleaf.

LOMONOSOV, Mikhail Vasil'evich (1711-1765). Kratkoi Rossiiskoi Letopisets s Rodosloviem. [A Short Chronicle of Russia with a Genealogy]. St. Petersburg: Imperial Academy of Sciences, 1760. 8° (164 x 111mm). Engraved head- and tail-pieces and engraved vignettes throughout. (Light browning, some light staining.) Near contemporary marbled boards (spine chipped and with old repair, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Sergei Aleksandrovich Rinkevich (stamp). FIRST EDITION of a work originally written as a textbook for the Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich, composed by Lomonosov at the same time as his Ancient Russian History. It includes a chronological list of princes and rulers from Riurik to Peter the Great, with a supplement by A.I. Bogdanov, librarian of the Academy of Sciences. Lomonosov began his historical researches in 1753, after Elizabeth I had expressed an interest in reading Russian history written 'in the style' of Lomonosov, and indeed demand for a work such as this Chronicle was so great that it was reprinted twice by 1761; the second and third editions, however, differ slightly from this first. Est: £10,000 - £15,000

LOMONOSOV, Mikhail Vasil'evich (1711-1765). Autograph manuscript transcription of Ars Poetica. [Moscow: 1734 and earlier]. Manuscript on paper, 133 leaves (lacking first leaf and possibly six from last gathering), 200 x 155mm, text in Latin in black ink, occasional manuscript annotations in Latin, a few in Russian, later pagination with errors. (First five leaves with margins strengthened and restored, rather browned and dampstained throughout.) Contemporary blindstamped calf over wooden boards (rebacked and restored). Provenance: M.V. Lomonosov -- Joasaph Chotuncensky (inscription in the bottom margin of the first few leaves recording the gift: 'Dono Venit Mosquae ab Ipso Rhetorices Studioso Michaele Lomonosov 1734 anno'). AN IMPORTANT LOMONOSOV MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENTING HIS STUDY OF POETRY. Lomonosov, 'the first university in Russia' in the words of Pushkin, was a prodigious polymath. But it is for his contribution to Russian letters that he is best know: for enabling modern literary Russian to move forward from its Slavonic roots. This manuscript, made during his studies at the Moscow Slavo-Greco-Latin Academy, records some of Lomonosov's first steps in his reform of the Russian language, which culminated in 1755 with the publication of his fundamental Russian grammar. NO LOMONOSOV MANUSCRIPT OF SUCH IMPORTANCE IS KNOWN TO US IN PRIVATE HANDS. This manuscript bears great similarities to the two surviving works transcribed by him: Naturalis Scientia vulgo Physica, and Artis Rhetoricae (now in Moscow's Lomonosov University), both also written while at the Moscow Academy. But it is unknown to Tsenakal, and to Lur-Saluces, who knew the Artis Rhetoricae, when he discussed the importance of poetry in Lomonosov's studies with Feofan Prokopovich: poetry 'was considered a science which aimed to interpret human life and human nature. It owed its fundamental rules to the great Classical authors [and its study] revealed the rhythmic prowess of its various forms' (Lur-Saluces, p.52). The present manuscript follows such a programme of exposition: the first part divides into five sections, 'De Necessitate artis Poúeos, De Tropis Figuris, De Carmine latino in communi, De Subsidio Carminis' and 'De Carmine in specie'; the second with the subheading 'De Oratione Locuta' has three sections, 'De Periodis, De Amplificatione' and 'De Chria'. The last leaf forms the latter part of an index. Lur-Saluces, Lomonossoff. Le prodigieux Moujik, Paris 1933); Tsenakal, Lomonosov, Moscow 1965, p.41.

LOMONOSOV, Mikhail (1711-1765). Rossiiskaya Grammatika. St. Petersburg: Imperial Academy of Sciences, 1755 [but 1765]. 8° (198 x 125mm). As issued, without frontispiece. (Inner margin of title repaired with some loss, occasional faint dampstain, a few tears, some repaired.) Contemporary quarter calf (later corners, rubbed). Provenance: deleted shelf-marks on title and endpapers. LOMONOSOV'S PHILOLOGICAL MASTERPIECE, which reformed literary Russian and remained the standard grammar well into the 19 t h century. This copy shows a contemporary manuscript shelf-mark on the endpaper and spine, possibly in the hand of Catherine II's librarian. The work was dedicated to the young Tsarevich Paul, who was born a year earlier, and publication was timed to coincide with the inauguration of Moscow University in 1755 -- the result of tireless efforts, and the source of great pride for Lomonosov. This copy is from the second edition, also dated 1755 on the title, but with the paper watermarked '1764'. Both lifetime editions are VERY RARE. Bitovt 1191; Sopikov 2951; SK 3775.
