(North Carolina, France/Italy, Born, 1945)Portrait of McKendree Robbins Long (1888-1976), unsigned, oil on canvas board, 12 x 9 in.; modern gilt wood frame, wear at edges, some surface abrasions and grime. Notes: From a strongly academic background under artists such as F. Luis Mora at the New York Artist's League and Philip de Lazslo, follower of John Singer Sargent, McKendree Long became a dichotomy when he abandoned all to depict the book of Revelations through apocolyptic painting. He was an important North Carolinian with diverse talents including poetry, expository writing and preaching as a Baptist minister. He is the grandfather of another important North Carolinian and proposed author of this portrait, fresco artist, Ben Long IV.. Provenance: Collection of the artist; Estate of Susan Long McMillan, Fayetteville, N.C., granddaughter of McKendree Long; By descent in Long Family
