        LEON EUGENE LONGEPIED (FRENCH, 1849-1888), FARM BOY, BRONZE

        Leon Eugene Longepied (French, 1849-1888), Farm Boy, bronze, 27.5 x 10.25 x 10.75", signed and marked: L. Longepied, "Paris" A student of Jules Cavelier, Mathurin Moreau and Jules Coutan at the Eole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Longepied exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1870. He was awarded a third class medal in 1880 and first class in 1882. He was appointed knight of the Legion of Honor on July 24, 1887. Longepied fought during the siege of Paris in 1870 and was, at his death, captain of the 36th regiment of territorial infantry. He died at his Parisian home, rue Denfert-Rochereau, in 1888 and is buried in the Montparnasse cemetery in Paris, where his tomb is adorned with an allegory of The Sculpture, figured by a young woman in tears, veiled and slightly draped, sitting in front of a funerary monument by the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Antoine Champeil.

Longepied et le cachet COLIN PARIS bronze à patine couleur brun clair, NOTE Longepied commence comme élève de Cavelier, Moreau et Coutan. Il débute au Salon de 1870 en exposant un buste de M. Garnier. C'est en 1882 qu'il obtint le Prix du Salon pour son Pêcheur ramenant dans ses filets la tête d'Orphée, érigé dans les jardins de Ranelagh à Paris. De plus, on trouve ses oeuvres à l'hôtel de Ville de Paris et à la Sorbonne.
