    • CONSTANT LORICHON(1800-1856): HERMES FASTENING HIS SANDAL, PENCIL AND CHARCOAL ON PAPER, DATED 1816
      Nov. 30, 2023

CONSTANT LORICHON(1800-1856): HERMES FASTENING HIS SANDAL, PENCIL AND CHARCOAL ON PAPER, DATED 1816

      Est: €400 - €800

Work: ca. 58,5 x 43 cm Paper: 64 x 47,5 cm Frame: 72 x 55,4 cm This academic drawing was undoubtedly modelled after a plaster sculpture. The sculpture of Hermes fastening his sandal, which exist in several versions, is a Roman marble copy of a lost Greek bronze original in the manner of Lysippos, dating to the fourth century B.C. The identification is based on an identification of the original bronze model as a sculpture of Hermes in the gymnasium and thermae of Zeuxippos in Constantinople, which was described in detail by Christodoros of Koptos in his ekphrasis of the gymnasium as it still remained in late antiquity (link). The Roman marble sculpture is nowadays part of the Louvre collection (link). Provenance: - Ex-collection Pierre Passebon. - Private collection, Belgium.

      C. LORICHON (*1800), Hercules Farnese, 1816, Charcoal

      Est: €1,650 - €2,200

Constant Louis Antoine Lorichon (born 1800 Paris): Drawing of the ancient sculpture of Hercules Farnese, 1816, Charcoal Technique: Washed Charcoal on Paper Watermark: - Fruit - Grape - Date: Inscription: Lower right signed: "C. Lorichon". Lower right dated: "1816". Date: 1816 Description: Constant Lorichon was only 16 years old when he created this impressive drawing of the famous statue of Hercules Farnese. Already with a great feeling for the soft charcoal pencil and the delicate wash, he drew here a very accurate image of the ancient statue, which is now in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. The sculpture, modelled on an ancient bronze by the Greek sculptor Lysipp, was copied several times in antiquity, making the depiction of the resting Hercules famous far beyond the borders of Greece and the Roman Empire in early times. The statue was named after its first post-antique location, the Palazzo Farnese of Pope Paul III in Rome. In 1546, parts of the figure had been found separately in Rome. A pair of legs, reconstructed by a contemporary sculptor, was added to the initially discovered torso, and the loose head was placed on top. Only after the sculpture was transferred to Naples in 1787 were the upper part and the original legs found later during excavations brought together and placed in the residence of the King of Naples. The fact that Lorichon was able to see the sculpture there in one piece in 1816 was also due to the fact that the already initiated theft of the sculpture by Napoleon in 1799 was prevented by the unrest of the revolution in Naples. Lorichon drew the sculpture even before the fingers on Hercules' left hand were added, so that the drawing shows us a slightly strange, albeit familiar impression of the statue. For study purposes, the young artist drew this and other ancient statues to train his eye and familiarise himself with the exemplary art of antiquity. Individual works of his studies have survived, whereby the present drawing of Hercules Farnese is certainly one of the most impressive - not least because of the popular subject matter. A detail that cannot be overlooked is the small strip of paper at the top centre, which was most likely placed there by the artist himself. Apparently, the young artist had slightly, albeit minimally, misjudged when laying out the drawing on the paper and only later noticed that the colossal sculpture no longer fit on the sheet. Without further ado, he backed the paper with the strip and also added the missing part of the crest. A wonderful, authentic testimony to Lorichon's artistic work. Keywords: Hercules Farnese; Antiquity; Sculpture; Mythology; Roman Empire; Heros; Club; Nemean lion; Lion skin; Lysipp; Greece, 19th century, Romanticism, Mythology, Italy,
