CHRISTIAN LUYCKX, AUCH „CHRISTIAAN LUYCKS“, 1623 ANTWERPEN – 1657 EBENDA

      Est: €25,000 - €30,000

STILLLEBEN MIT SCHMUCKKÄSTCHEN, KARTENSPIEL, KORALLE, SCHNECKEN UND EINER STATUE Öl auf Leinwand. 34 x 44 cm. (1410957) (18) Christian Luyckx, also known „Christiaan Luycks“,  1623 Antwerp – 1657 ebenda STILL LIFE WITH JEWELLERY BOX, CARD GAME, CORAL, SNAILS AND A STATUE Oil on canvas. 34 x 44 cm. We would like to thank Dr Fred G. Meijer for the attribution to the aforementioned artist. Notes: Carstian Luyckx, also known as the “Monogrammist KL” was a Flemish painter who specialized in still lifes in various subgenres, including flower still lifes, fish still lifes, and sumptuous still lifes. He studied painting under Philips de Marlier (ca. 1600-1668), a still life specialist, in 1645 under Frans Francken III. He became a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in the same year.

1,67 x 2,30 m, Doek. Olieverf. Verz. Estimation 80 000 - 120 000 €

      Est: €25,000 - €35,000

(Antwerp 1623 – after 1653) A Kunstkammer with cards, shells, coral and a sculpture of a child, oil on canvas, 34.5 x 44 cm, framed Provenance: European collection, Belgium We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution on the basis of high-resolution photographs. The present diverse and richly rendered assortment of objects, arrayed on a table covered in luxurious green and mauve velvet drapes, is a typically refined example of Antwerp still life painting, from the hand of one of the city’s most enigmatic masters, Christiaan Luycks. The crimson coral from the tropics, along with the China-trade lacquer chest to the right, offset by the delicate Italian figurine, reflect both Antwerp’s mercantile success and the general attendant air of Baroque exuberance. The trading hub’s wealthy collectors, and humanist thinkers, revelled in the treasures and natural phenomena brought from around the world, which they conserved in so-called ‘wunderkammers’ as evidenced here by varied tones of the seashells set on the table in the present picture. These works also played with concepts of perception, and so also the brilliance of painting as a liberal art, able to imitate and rival nature. Also known as Carstian Luycks and originally simply known as the ‘Monogrammist KL’, the artist was a central painter of the Antwerp sub-genres of pronkstillevens, vanitas and hunting scenes. Trained under Frans Francken III and Philips de Marlier, Luycks later created collaborative works with David Teniers II, one the most renowned and versatile painters of his age, as in Kitchen still life with vase of flowers, dead birds, fish and a cat conserved in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden.

Öl auf Leinwand. 34,4 × 44 cm. ---------------

Segal and L. Helmus, Jan Davidsz de Heem en zijn Kring, exhibition catalogue, Utrecht 1991, p. 209, cat. no. 42, reproduced p. 111, fig. 42 (and in the German language addition). NOTE Carstiaen Luyckx lived in Antwerp all his life, apart from a brief sojourn in Lille, and he trained under Philips de Marlier and Frans Francken III. Much of his output consists of game still lifes influenced by Frans Snyders and especially by Jan Fyt, but at some point (none of his pictures are dated) he came under the influence of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, presumably after the latter moved from Utrecht to Antwerp in the early 1650s. The Herweg picture is an excellent example of Luyckx' response to De Heem: like his fellow Antwerp painter Willem Gabron, he responded to De Heem's style in his own idiosyncratic manner rather than imitating him, as did, for example, Joris van Son.

      Carstiaen Luyckx (Antwerp 1623-?1653)

      Est: $18,960 - $28,440

A garland of roses, carnations, snowdrops, honeysuckle, morning glory and other flowers around a stone cartouche with a coat-of-arms oil on canvas, unframed 36 x 29 in. (91.5 x 73.6 cm.) NOTES We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD for the attribution, given on the basis of photographs; he dates the work to fairly late in the artist's career, following the artist's presumed departure from Antwerp in the 1650s, and possibly painted in France. The coat-of-arms would appear to be a later addition, presumably painted over another image.
