            Oct. 22, 2017

1940's Frank Marshall Ventriloquist Figure w/Expressive Face

            Est: $1,000 - $1,200

This is a full size Frank Marshall ventriloquist figure from the early 1940's. He has slot jaw, upper lip and rolling eye winker. What is unusual is that the eyes in this figure are glass and therefore the rolling eye is the glass color. The eye appears to have never been painted for when it rolls down closed, it is so close in the eye socket that paint would just rub off in the process of rolling down. The neck is the semi ball and socket as the full ball and socket was not yet being used by Marshall. This figure originally came from the estate of John D. Addley of New York who was a magician.

            Oct. 16, 2016

Small Size Frank Marshall 1950's Ventriloquist FIgure Dummy

            Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Frank Marshall made ventriloquist figures in all sizes. This one is a rather small figure that stands only 28" tall. He is a terrific figure with a wonderful face. He is unusual because he has original cast hands and cast feet instead of wood. The original muslin on the arms and legs matches the muslin covering the body. Marshall did a similar type figure for Ventriloquist Bob King called Tiny. It too had hands and feet which were not carved wood. This figure has mouth movement only and of course the head can move 360 degrees. He was crafted by Frank in the 1950's and has great original paint and wig.

Extremely Rare Frank Marshall Ventriloquist Figure Dummy Lucky Charlie

            Est: $2,000 - $2,500

This ventriloquist figure known as Lucy Charlie was fully restored to the exact way he was when Frank Marshall first created him. It is believed that he is a one of a kind and that Marshall did not make more than one of this figure. Lucky Charlie may be one of the rarest of the heads done by Marshall because it is the face of the Punch puppet from Punch and Judy fame. The figure stands 40" tall and he has the following functions, slot jaw, winker/blinkers rolling eyes, smoker and spitter. Everything is back to fully functional. There is a picture of Frank Marshall holding this figure that is not included with the figure but is here for reference. (we do not have the original).

Clifford Guest Kangaroo Ventriloquist Figure by Frank Marshall

            Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Clifford Guest was a fantastic ventriloquist who is famous for having his Frank Marshall figure run around the stage trying to get away from him. Clifford also did a fantastic cry baby effect. What most people do not know is that being from Australia he, back in the late 1940's and early 1950's commissioned Frank Marshall to build him some Kangaroo figures. This figure was never completed by Marshall. The kangaroo head which was signed inside "for Clifford Guest 1952" passed from Frank Marshall's sister to Brian Hamilton to Bob Isaacson to Ray Guyll to Steve Meyers to Bill Nelson to Dan Willinger who hired Les Lamborn to finish and restore the Kangaroo to a private collection and now available to a new home.

            Oct. 16, 2016

Frank Marshall Ventriloquist "Nosey" Figure Made in 1937 for Leonard Pearson

            Est: $1,800 - $2,200

One of Frank Marshall's most popular faces was called Nosey in his 1931 catalog. This was the face that Paul Winchell used to create his famous character Jerry Mahoney. This is an early Nosey figure. It is a bit smaller than usual standing only 36" tall. He only has mouth movement and it is done with the ring pull. The paint has been touched up and the wig is an old replacement but fits his character with precision. The eyes also have been replaced with new balls but the irises are the original. Originally they eyes were all glass but they didn't survive the years and some abuse. He has the flat style Marshall hands of the period. This figure was built in 1937. In the back of the head is written, "December 20, 1937 for Leonard Pearson". He is a prime example of Frank's Carving skills. A superb face and look. He is of course carved wood.

This figure was made in the mid 1950's by Marshall and is one of very few that had these large round eyes. He has side to side self centering eyes, crossing eyes and of course slot jaw. • A Frank Marshall Ventriloquist Figure Used by Canfield Smith
            Oct. 16, 2016

A Frank Marshall Ventriloquist Figure Used by Canfield Smith

            Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Canfield Smith was a performer in the late 1940's and 1950's and was what Stanley Burns labeled as a "Cod Performer" and that is a performer that was a comedian who discovered that mis copy-ing can be lucrative. Canfield Smith made audiences laugh with his standard figure whose arm would drop off in the middle of a routine, with Smith seemingly indifferent to his companion's plight. The dummy finally complained, "Hey! Canfield.... There's a draft in here. Is there a carpenter in the house?" Canfield played the Palace as well as club dates after vaudeville. This figure you are looking at was signed inside on the back of the mouth palate "made by Frank Marshall for Canfield Smith Phila". Frank also signed it in 3 other places and it also has his card pasted inside too. This figure was restored. This figure has side to side self centering eyes, his right eye winks and of course slot jaw. A very fine figure that once belonged to a Pennsylvania performer. In 1953, Canfield lived at 6613 Kindred Street, Philadelphia, PA. Canfield T Smith was born January 1906. He died March 1990

            Oct. 16, 2016

Frank Marshall's Bernie Birchwood Ventriloquist Figure

            Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Frank Marshall's Berni Birchwood ventriloquist figure. This ventriloquist figure is unusual for a Marshall and was created late in Frank Marshall's career although he has one thing that is a throw back to his earlier creations. He has the leather under his chin but it does not attach as the leather did back in the 30's and forties. It is shaped and allows the mouth to really open wide yet you do not see the hole under the chin. Also unusual is that the ears on this Marshall are extremely detailed and his nostrils are also carved out very deep. The ball and socket neck is rather large but the head is also a bit bigger than normal but the total height of the figure is the standard 40" tall. The head is secured with the normal screws though the top sides of the head and also the lower back of the neck. The center lower screw secures the head stick. His wig is original, is a bit thin and has a perfect part just like the hair style of the time. The card inside his head is from the Loomis Blvd address so I this fellow would date from the late 1950's to early 1960. His lever and head stick are original but the lever is not the common chop stick but rather a dowel. He only has mouth movement but Bernie has a great look.

Fully Loaded ca. 1935 Frank Marshall Ventriloquist Figure Original Clothes

            Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Here is an unusual Frank Marshall figure which dates from around 1935. This figure is a large figure standing 42" tall. This figure is still wearing his original military clothing and you will notice the black legs. These are original and Marshall did this on figures he dressed in outfits that have shorts. He has the head stick that goes all the way to the bottom board of the body and gives it the 360 degree rotation. He also has slot jaw, upper lip, side moving and self centering eyes, one eye rolling winker, raising eyebrows and a spitter. When Dan received the figure his paint was all chipped and falling off and he was bald. His paint was re-done by Lee Dunn and Dan Willinger did the wig.

He is 38" tall and has everything original just as he came from Frank's shop. The wig, cloths and shoes are all original. Frank Marshall Joe Doaks Ventriloquist Figure w/Great Provenance1938

            Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Dwight Hamborsky Sr purchased this figure from Frank Marshall in 1938 and he is a great example of how you want to find a Marshall figure. This figure is a Joe Doaks and is in amazing condition. This Marshall figure stands a full 42 inches in height, has a semi ball and socket neck and has the following functions: slot jaw, his right eye winks, and his eyes move side to side and self center. His paint is in beautiful original condition and because he was used as a fortune telling figure a turban was placed on his head and that preserved the original red crepe hair. He is in his original outfit which was used by both Dwight Sr and Dwight Jr. Another unusual feature is the hands on Joe are the larger size Marshall hands which Marshall used on his recreations of the great Lester's figure Frank Byron Jr.

Frank Marshall Mickey O'Finn Ventriloquist Figure Used by Bob Fisher ca. 1950

            Est: $2,500 - $3,000

Bob Fisher was a ventriloquist from the Chicago area and performed in the early 1950's with his figure Mickey O'Finn, which was carved for him by Frank in 1950. To me when I look at Mickey O'Finn I see a very strong resemblance to his first cousin Danny O'Day. Bob used his Marshall dummy with the utmost of care because this fine Frank Marshall figure looks like it was just delivered from the master today. He is in what I would call 99.9% perfect original condition. The only flaw is the tiny spec of paint loss on his chin. Bob always wrapped him up carefully when done performing and stored him in his suitcase so his condition is as you see him 57 years after being made. A true museum piece. I have enclosed a close up of Bob with Mickey circa 1950. Mickey has side to side moving eyes, his right eye winks and slot jaw. He also has a hand shaker an unusual feature on a Marshall figure.

Small Size Frank Marshall 1950's Ventriloquist FIgure Dummy

            Est: $2,000 - $2,500

Frank Marshall made ventriloquist figures in all sizes. This one is a rather small figure that stands only 28" tall. He is a terrific figure with a wonderful face. He is unusual because he has original cast hands and cast feet instead of wood. The original muslin on the arms and legs matches the muslin covering the body. Marshall did a similar type figure for Ventriloquist Bob King called Tiny. It too had hands and feet which were not carved wood. This figure has mouth movement only and of course the head can move 360 degrees. He was crafted by Frank in the 1950's and has great original paint and wig.

His head stick is the long style to the bottom of the body giving the performer the ability to spin the head around in a full 360 degree rotation. He has much of the original paint but there is also some touch up as well. His hands have been repainted a flesh tone. His wig is old but probably not original. Lots of personality in this classic Marshall figure.
