James Marshall Miss Nelson Is Missing Autographed

        Est: $300 - $400

Author signed, inscribed, with a drawing as shown. James Marshall (1942 - 1992) was active/lived in New York. James Marshall is known for Children's book illustration. James Marshall was born October 10, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and graduated from Southern Connecticut State College in 1967. In 1970 he began working as a free-lance author and illustrator, and the following year illustrated his first book for children, Plink, Plink, Plink by Byrd Baylor. In 1972 Marshall published the first of his George and Martha books, the story of two hippos humorously conveying their experiences and friendship. The story's emphasis on friendship and the witty way it was written for very young children set the tone for many of Marshalls later works. Throughout his prolific career he was frequently praised by critics for the wit and humor evident in his works, their occasional sly sophistication, and his ability to treat subjects near and dear to young children, such as friendship and respect, with style and a lack of condescension to young readers. Marshall's works are considered simple in artistic style. Most are done in his trademark line drawing, through his stories, use of satire and humor to convey such themes as friendship between the dissimilar, and respect and tolerance for those different from oneself. These are hailed by critics as equally likely to appeal to adults as well as children. The Stupids series, written by Harry Allard and illustrated by Marshall, satirize the American nuclear family of the 1950s, while their Miss Nelson series tells of the clever schoolteacher and her alter-ego who teach the misbehaving students at the Horace Smedley School a lesson or two. Marshall also retold and illustrated a number of classic fairy tales, giving them a new freshness; his retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears was awarded a Caldecott Honor citation in 1989. Marshall also wrote a number of books under the pseudonym Edward Marshall, including some of his Fox series that related the trials and tribulations of Fox in such places as school, on the stage, and babysitting some horrible children.

        Jun. 24, 2021

JAMES MARSHALL (1942-1992) "A Few Unpretentious Drawings for Kenneth Maples." [SKETCHBOOK / BOSTON]

        Est: $2,500 - $3,500

JAMES MARSHALL (1942-1992) "A Few Unpretentious Drawings for Kenneth Maples." As titled on opening page of a personal sketchbook created by Marshall during his time at The New England Conservatory of Music and gifted to his high school friend, circa 1964. Single unbound Quaker Artist Tablet containing 22 numbered full-page watercolor and ink drawings, some mounted, others drawn directly onto the page, a final sheet ("the end / Love, J"). Notebook measures 253x350 mm; 10x14 inches, drawings vary in size; spine perished, but contents seem to be complete, cover signed "Marshall / 78 Gainsboro [sic] 3A Boston 02115" in lower right corner. Laid in is a loose, separate drawing titled, inscribed, and signed by Marshall: "Aesop / Kenneth, this is the one about the blackbird who disguises himself to enter the beauty contest. The old fool. Jim." 5 1/4x4 1/2 inches, image, on 9x8 1/4-inch paper, laid into notebook. Provenance: Kenneth Marshall; gift of the artist to friend Kenneth Maples; private collection, San Antonio, Texas. A thoroughly charming sketchbook by beloved children's book author and creator of the famous "George and Martha" series of books about the friendship and adventures of a witty hippopotamus couple. Created for a close friend from his early years in San Antonio, presumably before Marshall planned a trip to Europe, the humorous drawings feature scenes in classic Boston area locations including the MFA, New England Conservatory, Locke-Ober, Gainsboro Street, The Bar of the Other Side on Charles Street, Hayes-Bickford's, The English Tea Room, Newbury Street, and Aladdin's Cave. Some drawings include his bulldog Irene (whom he often featured in his books), two self-portraits, and other curious animals and characters whose physical details nod to the style and types he would develop in his later work. Marshall attended The New England Conservatory of Music where he studied viola until a nerve damage in his hand caused him to leave. Not long after switching studies and graduating from Southern Connecticut State College in 1967, he began working as a freelance author and illustrator, and his first book for children, "Plink, Plink, Plink" by Byrd Baylor was published in 1970. Although he had no formal art training, Marshall illustrated more than 70 books before he died at the early age of 50 from AIDS-related causes. In 2007 the American Library Association posthumously awarded him the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal for a "substantial and lasting contribution" to American children's literature.

MARSHALL, JAMES. 1942-1992.- "'Oooh,' she said. 'This is scary,'"

        Est: $5,000 - $7,000

"'Oooh,' she said. 'This is scary,'" watercolor and pencil, 292 x 451 mm, signed and inscribed for Arnold Lobel "For Arnold, Love Jim." Matted and framed. An alternative illustration for Little Red Riding Hood (New York: Dial Books, 1987). Provenance : Arnold Lobel. As the creator of George and Martha, the Stupids and Viola Swamp, James Marshall approached the classic fairy tale with great wit and aplomb. Only he could have depicted the Wolf hiding behind a tree with his snout emerging. He presented this alternative to the published illustration to his dear friend and fellow children's book illustrator Arnold Lobel, best known for the Frog and Toad books.

        1. "Hezekiah Q. Butterworth (Meanie)," unpublished 11-page manuscript on six sheets for a proposed picture book. Color felt tip pen. The name of this foul-tempered crocodile was ironic: the real Hezekiah Butterworth (1839–1905) was a prolific and pious children's book writer and an editor of The Youth's Companion. Intended as a Christmas present to Ms. Scott, this delightful bit of nonsense was never published probably because the children's book trade was not ready for this "pathetic story of cruelty and general nastiness." 2. "The Opera," unpublished five-page manuscript of a fanciful opera with an undated decorated letter. Watercolor and ink. The paintings of "La Tosca," "Dancing Bulldogs" and other subjects suggest the unlikely influence of both Eugene Berman and Edward Gorey. 3. Six unpublished drawings of a couple on Christmas Day, before and after opening their presents. Felt tip pen. various sizes.
