        • Laurent Fries/ Martin Waldseemüller / Claudius Ptolemy - Tabula Undecima (XI) Asiae

Laurent Fries/ Martin Waldseemüller / Claudius Ptolemy - Tabula Undecima (XI) Asiae

          Est: ₱1,000,000 - ₱1,300,000

PROPERTY FROM THE VILEM CYRIL WILHELM COLLECTION Tabula Undecima (XI) Asiae 1525, second edition woodcut on paper, handcolored 15" x 21" (38 cm x 53 cm) PROVENANCE: Acquired from Baynton-Williams, Belgravia, London, October 1980 WRITE UP: This is Laurent Fries' version of Ptolemy's eleventh map of Asia, covering the "southeastern corner" of the known world. The map shows "India beyond the Ganges" and covers the eastern part of the Indian Ocean, prominently showing the Malaysian Peninsula or the Golden Chersonese as the Greeks called it.. Fries' map is a reduced copy of Waldseemüller's eleventh Ptolemy map of Asia, with the Malaysian peninsula, the islands of Maniolae (by some identified with Manilla), and the legendary huge sea port of Cattigara, possibly corresponding to Canton. It is furthest places in the Far East that the Greek merchants visited for trading. This is an example from the early 1525 Strassburg edition. The woodcut decorations on the back are attributed to Albrecht Dürer, who also made the famous woodcut print of the armillary sphere in this atlas. (Leen Helminck)

Oceani occidentalis seu Terrae Novae tabula (titled on verso). [Strasbourg, 1525.] Woodcut map, 387 x 297 mm (to neatline), Latin text with woodcut vignettes on verso. Centerfold modestly toned, two wormholes, else fine. Matted and in double-sided frame. Fine and attractive map of the Atlantic and newly-discovered Americas, re-cut and slightly reduced by Fries from Waldseemüller's original of 1513, the first atlas map specifically devoted to the New World. Fries' amendments include the addition of a 7-line caption describing Columbus's discoveries, a vignette of natives and an opossum in the formerly blank "terra incognita," the change from "terra incognita" to "terra nova," and the reversion to the denomination "Parias" for North America. The present is an early Fries issue: the second of the two Strasbourg issues which have the fine woodcut vignette depicting Columbus encountering a native on the verso. Burden 4, state 2.

Third edition in German, the first translated by the Zurich reformer, Leo Jud, of Luther's revolutionary tract stripping the monastic life of its scriptural basis. First printed in 1521, De votis monasticis iudicium (On the monastic vows) sparked the dissolution of many monasteries across Europe. In Zurich in 1523 (the year and place of the Jud edition), the city allowed nuns to marry, dissolved all monasteries in its province and used the money for the poor and for education. Basel and Geneva followed suit by the end of the decade. Apart from a few unobtrusive wormholes, THE CONTEMPORARY WALLET BINDING IS IN VERY FINE CONDITION. Benzing 1013.
