Nineteen copies of the Imperial Folio edition containing the large plates have now been located, including the present example. One of these copies is in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. When first released, these engravings were greeted with outstanding critical acclaim - the critic for The Literary Gazette proclaimed: "we know no artist, whose genius so perfectly fitted him being the illustrator of the mighty Milton; and in what we have seen of his conceptions he has more than realised the highest of our hopes. There is a wildness, a grandeur, and a mystery about his designs which are indescribably fine:- the painter is also a poet. ... we look upon these engravings to belong to the foremost order of true genius: beyond this there is no praise." [The Literary Gazette, April 2nd 1825]. 'The illustrations that made Martin's name as an engraver". "They are without doubt one of the most significant series of British book illustrations ever to have been produced.' [Campbell, John Martin, Visionary Printmaker, p. 41] Provenance: Michael J. Leona Vicario, 6 January 1833. Broadside (305 x 206 mm). Signed by Ramon Muisquiz, routed to Goliad. FIRST EDITION. Troubles in Texas began when the government of Coahuila y Tejas announced the ratification of the Zacatecas plan, in opposition to Santa Anna's Plan of Zavaleta. The Zacatecas plan to form a commission on government collapsed after a few weeks and Coahuila y Tejas accepted Santa Anna as president in April 1833. Streeter Texas 775n. [With:] VERAMENDI. Broadside (308 x 212 mm). FIRST EDITION of this decree on the adoption of the Zavaleta Plan by Santa Anna. New elections are called for, and ten articles contain instructions for officials in the elections. The voters brought Santa Anna into power, but the election of senators, deputies and a president for Texas did not appease the independent spirit. REV. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. (1929-1968) Clergyman and civil rights leader who advocated nonviolent but active and massive confrontation in order to obtain rights for blacks. Fine content T.L.S. "Martin L. King Jr." 1p. 4to. on Southern Christian Leadership Conference letterhead, Atlanta, Dec. 3, 1963 responding to an invitation to participate in a "Race Relations Day Service" at the Aldersgate Methodist Church in Wilmington, Del. King politely declines the invitation citing his need to tend to his own congregation at Ebenezer Baptist Church. King writes, in full: "This is to acknowledge receipt of your letter of recent date inviting me to speak at Aldersgate Methodist Church on Sunday, February 7, 1965. First, let me say how deeply grateful I am to you for extending this invitation. Because I am away from my church so much during the week, I have had to adopt a firm policy of not being away from my church more than one Sunday in each month. My calendar reveals that I have already accepted, tentatively, an engagement for the Second Sunday in February, 1965. I never accept invitations for the first Sunday in a month since that is our communion Sunday at my church. Please know that I deeply regret my inability to serve you on this very significant occasion." Although King had long been a leader of the civil rights struggle, his address at the August 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom propelled him to national celebrity and also paved the way for passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. King's electrifying "I have a dream" speech placed him great demand for speaking engagements. Yet despite this newfound celebrity, King still prioritized the needs of his own congregation. Offered together with a retained copy of King's invitation. Light horizontal creases, else very fine condition.
