            Donald Maxwell (1877-1936) - A pair of industrial river views showing cement kilns and stacks, on the Thames, both with battleships, pen and black ink, over pencil, monochrome wash, heightened with white, on grey wove paper, one initialled D.M., the other signed, 17 x 29 cm. (6 3/4 x 11 1/4 in), and 21 x 29 cm. (8 1/4 x 11 1/2 in), respectively, (2). Maxwell was fascinated with the cement industry and it's tranformative impact on the landscape of the Medway and the Lower Thames Valleys. In Unkown Kent Maxwell included a chapter entitled The Land of Cement and in 1926 wrote of the landscape: 'Strange cliffs and wonderful ravines abound, and there is scenery in places suggestive of the moon.'

(13 1/2 x 10 1/4 in). In early 1914 Maxwell visited the Holy Land to make sketches for a series of articles for Frederick Palmer's magazine The Treasury. A Painter's Pilgrimage with Bible and Brush through the Holy Land appeared in six parts in late 1914. It would appear that the current work was executed while on this trip.

            Nine Royal Doulton pottery tiles designed by Donald Maxwell (1877-1936) for his "Doomsday" series of Kent Villages, each 5.5ins x 6.5ins, and comprising - Loose, Lullingstone, Yalding, Southfleet, Halling, Westerham, Boughton Aluph, Sevenoaks and Laddingford, each with artist's initials and titled, circa 1934-1936 (each with impressed factory mark) Note : The Laddingford tile appears to be very rare. The "Journal of the Tiles & Architectural Ceramics Society", volume 12, 2006, states that up until that time no example of a Laddingford tile was known
