      • Birds.- Mayer (Henry Leonard) Illustrations of British Birds, 4 vol. in 3, first edition, [1835-41].
        Nov. 19, 2020

Birds.- Mayer (Henry Leonard) Illustrations of British Birds, 4 vol. in 3, first edition, [1835-41].

        Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Birds.- Mayer (Henry Leonard) Illustrations of British Birds, 4 vol. in 3, first edition, 320 hand-coloured plates, including egg plates, tissue-guards, occasional marginal spotting, bookplate, near contemporary morocco, gilt, a little rubbed, slight bumping to corners and spine extremities, folio, [1835-41]. ⁂ The publisher's name 'Longman & Co' does not feature a full-stop as is usual for the first issue of this work. Wood states that not only did Mayer execute and add additional plates for friends, but that "there were certainly two, possibly three issues of the first edition of the folio, and that the later ones were being published before the first was complete, the plates often being interchanged or duplicated." This means that there are rarely two copies alike.

        Scribner's / April.

        Est: $1,200 - $1,500

Because there were no official posters for the modern Olympics until the 5th games in Stockholm in 1912, all related materials for the first four events have become particularly valuable to the collector. Here, the poster for the April 1896 issue of Scribner's shows the magazine tying into the first modern Olympiad-taking place that month in Athens-with "The Olympic Games and their Revival" as its cover story. The highly decorated pedestal and elaborately curling smoke from the Olympic flame are characteristic of the children's fantasy tales that were the main work of this New York author-illustrator.

      • The New York Sunday Journal.
        May. 04, 2008

        The New York Sunday Journal.

        Est: $1,000 - $1,200

The New York Sunday Journal.Subtle, dignified journalism wasnit precisely the angle that played the utmost importance to the publishers of the New York newspaper claiming to be "The Best On Earth." But when you're out to sell the most papers in a competitive market, you do what it takes. And who wants subtlety in journalism really. Especially when you have an artist like Mayer providing fantastic graphics to catapult your product into the eye of the public, such as this buxom canoer-who has yet to break a sweat or display the first signs of fear despite the tempestuous surf-with Poseidon himself at the rudder. The few Journal features mentioned in the side panel are hilarious, with a personal favorite being the dry goods merchant who rose from the dead just in time to stop his own funeral. Talk about a close call! And with all this entertainment being offered for a scant three cents, the "Don't You Want To Read" copy is superfluous, seeing as there could be no other response than, "Dagnabit! I want to read it all!!" An illustrator, caricaturist and poster designer, Mayer contributed to many of the dayis best children's books, magazines and newspapers. His feature "Impressions of the Passing Show" graced the pages of The New York Times daily from 1904 to 1911. HENRY MAYER (1868-1953)
