Michiel van Musscher, A Female Merchant and a Maid on the Eenhoornsluis Bridge in Amsterdam

          Est: €60,000 - €80,000

Signed and dated lower left: Mi.v. Musscher / Pinxit A. 1669 Michiel van Musscher was a sought-after and celebrated artist who was particularly in demand for his richly decorated portraits and genre scenes. In his work, both genres often merge into a single painting. This is also the case with the present, very early painting. It was created shortly after Musscher completed several months of training with Adriaen van Ostade. Alongside him, Gabriel Metsu in particular had an influence on his painting. His artistic production unfolds in this field of tension between the peasant and bourgeois genres. Van Musscher's style is also unmistakable due to his joy in fine painting, which he expressed in the rich allegorical and still-life-like additions to his portraits and genre scenes. The scene of our picture is the ‘Eenhoornsluis’ (Unicorn Lock) in the west of Amsterdam, on the Korte Prinsengracht, seen from the north-east. This view, with the tower of the ‘Westkerk’ in the background, has remained largely unchanged over the centuries and is still easily recognisable today. A young maid meets a greengrocer with loaded baskets on this bridge. She has carrots, cucumbers and green beans on offer, which obviously attracts the interest of the young maid. The individualised faces of the two protagonists leave little doubt that the artist painted them after real women. The old vegetable seller, for example, is the same woman who was ‘portrayed’ in Musscher's painting ‘A Slaughtered Pig, in the Distance Haarlemmerpoort’ (ill. 1; Amsterdam Museum, inv. no. SA 38126), painted a few months earlier. Apart from this parallelism, including the brown and white spotted spaniel that probably belongs to her, the overall conception of both paintings is comparable: A genre or everyday scene taking place in a specific, recognisable place in Amsterdam. Incidentally, it is known that Michel van Musscher lived not far from the ‘Eenhoornsluis’.

          MICHIEL VAN MUSSCHER 1645 - 1705 - A COURT MOTIF

          Est: -

The court motif presents a painting of a wealthy woman who practices playing a musical instrument and in the meantime refreshes herself with oysters. Michiel van Musscher was a Dutch Golden Age painter. According to Houbraken, he showed a talent for drawing at a young age, and had many teachers, of which he kept a record. Though his entire education spanned several years, Houbraken was astonished that he became so skilled with so few hours of professional study, and concludes that he must have had a great natural talent that he practiced extensively on his own.

In the past, this painting has been described as a self-portrait by the artist. Recently however, it is regarded as a portrait of an unknown landscape painter due to the canvas hanging on the wall behind him. Pieter van Thiel wrote in his 1974 article about Musscher's self-portraits (cf. literature), that this unidentified "schreibende" (writing) artist could also be a collector, since the landscape hanging behind him predates the portrait, quite probably before 1650. Prof. Dr. Teresa Bischoff The sale of the SØR Rusche Collection is a concept auction, creating a dialogue between paintings by Old Masters and works by contemporary artists. Presented in pairs, the artworks communicate with each other, though each single piece is on offer as a separate lot. The present lot corresponds with lot no. 1520.

Oil on canvas, relined German/French School, early 18th century With a certificate of authenticity by Godefridus Johannes Hoogewerff, director of the Institute of Dutch History in Rome, from 1924 to 1950 (dated February 2nd 1943); here, attributed to Michiel van Musscher (1645-1705) and with indication of an artist’s monogram and date Dimensions: 81.5 x 65.5 cm Frame: 105 x 89 cm Good condition Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU. Condition: The painting is in good condition, consistent with age. The canvas is relined and cut along the edges, where narrow strips of paper cover the stretcher. The paint surface shows evenly spread craquelure and a number of tiny, almost invisible losses of material. According to the inspection under UV light there are presumably areas of retouching to the figures and a new layer of varnish. The artist’s monogram and date ‘1667‘, mentioned in the certificate, have probably been removed in the course of a restauration after 1943. The stretcher measures 81.5 x 65.5 cm. The richly decorated stucco frame shows scattered marks with small losses of material and measures 105 x 89 cm. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

          Est: €3,000 - €3,900

Brunner, Paris, 1921 (as by Ter Borch); Private Collection, Israel; Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, December 16, 1999, lot 49, for £260,000. LITERATURE S.J. Gudlaugsson, Katalog der Gemälde Gerard Ter Borch, The Hague 1960, p. 176, no. 170c, reproduced plate XVIII, fig. 1; O. Ydema, Carpets and their Datings in Netherlandish Paintings, Leiden/ Zutphen 1991, p. 178, no. 699. NOTE Michiel van Musscher's genre paintings depicting richly furnished bourgeois interiors found a ready market in wealthy Amsterdam, where he was living in the 1670s. The gilt-framed painting, table carpet, silver desk set and lavishly liveried negro page all testify to the mercantile wealth which had poured into the Netherlands by the third quarter of the seventeenth century. The young woman has set aside her ladylike task of sewing and is absorbed in a letter, presumably a love letter. The page awaits her reply with resigned, rather quizzical, patience. The theme of the love letter, with its frisson of mystery, was very popular in Dutch genre painting. The pose of the woman, the table and the basket in the foreground are very similar to Gerard Ter Borch's A lady reading a letter in the Wallace Collection, London, which Gudlaugsson (See Literature, vol. II, p.173, no.168) dates circa 1662 (see J. Ingamells, The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Pictures: Vol. IV Dutch and Flemish, 1992, p.40-41, cat. P236, illus.). Ter Borch's painting, however, is a composition of rather cool colors. In this work van Musscher makes splendid play of rich coral reds, from the young woman's dress and fashionable shoes to the table carpet and the page's red-trimmed livery.

Ameschot, a.o.) sale, Amsterdam, Fred. Muller, 15-17 June 1937, lot 55. NOTE Born in Rotterdam, Michiel van Musscher received an eclectic training: initially with the obscure history painter Martin Saagmolen in 1660; then with the Leiden history and portrait painter Abraham van den Tempel from 1661; then with Gabriel Metsu, whose work was to have a profound influence, in 1665; and finally in Haarlem under Adriaen van Ostade in 1667. By 1668 he had settled in Amsterdam, where, in addition to genre scenes in the style of the Leiden Fijnschilders and, incongruously, Van Ostade, he developed a successful practice as a portrait painter: portraying his sitters in well-to-do interiors, as here, or in landscape settings. His work is sometimes reminiscent of that of his contemporary Eglon Hendrik van der Neer (1634-1703), who also deployed a mise-en-page akin to lavish genre interiors; see for example his Elegant couple in an Interior, dated 1678, sold London, Sotheby's, 6 December 1989, lot 101. By the 1670s Musscher had virtually abandoned genre painting, and by the mid-1680s, when he painted the present picture, he was one of the most sought-after portraitists in Amsterdam.

Like the present work, his genre pieces are reminiscent of Metsu and Frans van Mieris. Paintings in this manner, which most of the time illustrate the social life of Dutch patricians, are very charmful.
