        Collection de divers costumes comprenant les quadrilles du bal masqué donné à Munic le 15 fév. 1827. S.l.n.d. [Munich, 1827]. In-4, demi-maroquin rouge à long grain avec petits coins, dentelle dorée ornée de vasques aux angles, chiffre couronné au centre, dos lisse orné (Reliure de l'époque). Premier tirage de cette suite très rare, complète de la couverture lithographiée en noir servant de titre et des 14 planches dessinées d'après nature et lithographiées par Franz Xaver Nachtmann (1799-1846). Toutes les planches sont en épreuves délicatement coloriées, gommées et rehaussées d'or et d'argent dans cet exemplaire (Colas ne signale que huit planches en couleurs). Ces quatorze planches représentent des couples habillés pour le bal masqué bavarois de 1827 en costumes médiévaux tirés d'Ivanhoé, le roman de Walter Scott (pl. 1-6) ou en costumes hongrois, italien, bédouin, grec, albanais et polonais (pl. 7-12) ; enfin, deux scènes de groupe montrent différents costumes inspirés du carnaval romain (pl. 13-14). Précieux exemplaire au chiffre d'Augusta-Amélie de Bavière (1788-1850), duchesse de Leuchtenberg et princesse d'Eichstätt, fille du roi Maximilien Ier de Bavière et veuve d'Eugène de Beauharnais, fait lui-même vice-roi de Bavière de 1806 à 1814 par son beau-père Napoléon Ier. (lower right) 10 1/8 x 8 1/2 inches. This lot is located in Chicago. Property from the Collection of William L. Bernhard and Catherine Cahill, Southampton, New York Provenance: Sold: Christie's, Paris, March 18, 2004, Lot 329 Note: This work comes from the Southampton, New York home of the collectors Catherine Cahill, now deceased, and William L. Bernhard, who continues to live in their Manhattan Park Avenue home. Lifelong New Yorkers, they spent summers in Southampton and Washington, Connecticut, and winters in Palm Beach, where Ms. Cahill decorated their retreat on Major Alley Way with the noted interior designer, Keith Irvine of Irvine and Fleming. Ms. Cahill was an animal rights activist, and a daughter of John T. Cahill, a former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and a named partner in the international law firm, Cahill Gordon & Reindel. Mr. Bernhard is a philanthropist and descendant of the Lehman family of investment banking fame. He has served on many Boards of Directors, including the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art, Film at Lincoln Center, and the Winston Churchill Foundation.
