Felix Nadar (1820-1910) - Untitled (Portrait of a fashionable woman), 1890s

    Est: €400 - €600

Vintage platinum print cm 32 x 22 | 12.6 x 8.6 in. Signed in pencil on the image Considered not unjustly one of the greatest portrait painters of the century, but also a pioneer of modern photography thanks to a studio where work was carried out as in a small industry, Nadar had conceived a style that involved going beyond superficiality to obtain portraits that reflected the personality and taste of those who, in front of his lens, were to become not objects but subjects. In the work proposed here, the way of embellishing the portrait and making it unique through platinum printing is also remarkable.

Stampa fotografica vintage all'albumina. - Vintage albumen print.  11.81 x 7.09 in. Applied on carboard bearing 'Nadar' signature and his atelier address (51, Rue D'Anjou); inscribed in black pen.  "What you do not learn [...] is the moral intelligence of your subject - it is that intuition that puts you in communion with your model, makes you judge him, guides you towards his habits, his ideas, his character, and allows you to obtain, not just any plastic reproduction [...], but the most favourable resemblance, the most intimate resemblance". For Nadar, one of the most famous French portrait painters and photographers of the second half of the 19th century, the portrait was thus an exercise in "intimate resemblance", interiority, a psychological portrait, rendered through the sobriety of the poses and the plasticity created by the light. His portraits are among the first testimonies to the artistic possibilities of photography, in particular through the control of lighting. The new medium proves to be much more than a simple technique of mechanical reproduction of nature; it proves capable of capturing the expressive complexity of the subjects it portrays, and this seems to answer the questions that the new discovery had raised since its inception, namely whether photography was a simple technique for recording reality or whether it could be considered as a means of plastic expression in its own right.

Photograph: 19.5x16.3 cm (7¾x6½"); sheet: 34.3x24.8 cm (13½x9¾"). Matted. Adolphe Thiers (1797-1877) was a French statesman and historian. He was the second elected President of France, and the first President of the French Third Republic. An iconic photo from the Galerie Contemporaine (1876-84) by Félix Nadar (1820-1910), a high point in photographic publishing. The series contained Woodburytype portraits of leading figures in France by some of the world's leading photographers. Each issue of the series comprised a biographical essay and accompanying portrait, reproduced in Woodburytype and printed by Goupil (and for the ?nal volume, a successor ?rm). Published in two concurrent sections or series – a ?rst series "Littérateurs, Musicians, Etc." and a second series "Peintres et Sculpteurs," generally appeared on alternate weeks. The full run amounted to a total of 241 portraits issued in 13 volumes. The photographs differed notably, inasmuch as those in the ?rst series (included in this catalogue) were each represented by a large format, full-page portrait "hors texte" (an image printed on paper of especially high quality) generally 24X18 cm, within an ornamental border. In contrast, the subjects in the second series were represented by smaller portraits, on average 12 x 8 cm., mounted within the text.
