        watercolor on paper on panel, monogrammed and dated 1883 at lower right, presented under glass in the likely original frame, retaining five old gallery labels on the verso. SS 36.5 x 25.5 in.; DOA 45.75 x 34 in. North was among the central artists of the Idyllic School, a late Victorian movement of British artists known for depicting nuanced rural landscapes combining elements of social realism and idealism. Quantock Hills in Somerset was a particular favorite of North, an area he first visited with a friend in 1860. This lush and poetic painting was completed one year prior to his marriage to Selina Weetch, daughter of a Somerset farmer. Exhibited at the Preston Guild Art Exposition, 1902.
