Great artwork by the renowned poster artist James Northfield (1887-1973) depicting a couple standing high on the top of rocks in the foreground enjoying the scenic view of the Australian landscape over a valley with trees and buildings below and snowy mountain peaks in the far distance, the title text displayed above the image in stylised red letters and below with an image of tourist accommodation at the historic Mount Buffalo Chalet (built 1909). Published by the Victorian Railways. Printed by Syd. Day Ltd. Very good condition, restored folds and tears, repaired minor tears in margins, backed on linen. "One of ANTA's [Australia National Tourist Association] first actions was to commission a series of promotional posters from Northfield, Trompf and Sellheim, bringing their work to an international as well as national audience. These images, intended for display around the world but largely targeted at countries in the British Empire and the United States, celebrated Australia's 'unique' attractions, presenting colorful images of land and seascapes, flora and fauna and attractive people enjoying outdoor pursuits in the glorious weather. With the word "AUSTRALIA" printed across the top or bottom of each sheet, the posters served as a visual lexicon of Australian national identity" (Northfield p. 10). This poster depicts a King Parrot, an Eastern Rosella, Major Mitchell Cockatoos and a Sulfur-Crested Cockatoo. Northfield cover and p. 30.

"Northfield was one of Australia's most successful and well-known commercial artists between the early 1920s and the late 1950s . . . The golden wattle (Acacia Pycnantha), Australia's national flower, grows on trees and can reach heights of over 25 feet tall. Since 1899, Wattle Day has been held on September 1, the first day of Australian Spring. The flower, which appears on the country's coat of arms, is very much a part of the Australian psyche. This rare early poster, "Vic Rlwys Poster No. 39," is previously unrecorded. We could find no other auction records.

Currently, more than two-million people visit the reef each year—although that number was surely lower in the 1930s, which prompted Northfield's lush and ethereal underwater scene. The Reef continues to be the world's largest reef system; it's greater in size than the United Kingdom, Holland, and Switzerland combined. But after experiencing two massive coral bleaching events in 1998 and 2002, the fate of this ecosystem is quite grim. Northfield's design, however, provides a small but necessary reminder of the importance of maintaining this extraordinary and diverse environment. (Art Deco; Travel; Animals)
